Hi Tim

I had a look through the baptisms for a Philip Payn. Seems to be quite a common name! Tried to narrow the search down a bit as there are indexes for each Parish in Jersey. I can see an entry in the birth index for Philip Joseph in St Martin (Volume 4th May 1857 - 16th July 1866, page 64) and that the 1861 census shows Philip and Rebecca living in St Martin. So, there is a baptism for a Philippe Edouard Payn in St Martin on 2nd November 1832. Parents were given as Philippe and Marie Noel. This could tie in with the 1861 census which gives his age as 28 and his mother (head of household) as Mary. The 1841 census also ties up with a Philip aged 9 and parents named Philip and Mary.

Have a think about what I've found. I'll go and see if I can locate a marriage in the next couple of days.

Hi again

I have now checked the indexes for all Parish's for a marriage and whilst there are entries for a Philip Payn there is no corresponding Mary Rebecca on the same page. There were two Mary's that could have been possibilities but a check of the actual certificate at the Registry Office showed them to be marrying someone else.

I also checked to see if a Mary Rebecca was baptised in St Martin from 1829 to 1842 and there is no entry..
