He was in the navy but we aren't sure whether Royal or Merchant. He was married with 3 kids and at some point went to sea and is believed to have jumped ship - so say in Australia.
The children were brought up by Granny after the step-mother ill-treated them and one of them died in childhood.
That is the gist of the tale and although at the time great efforts were made to find him, not even the Salvation Army were successful.
A few generations later we would still love to find out what became of him and if anyone has any ideas please let me know.
He was born around 1884-1886 in Birkenhead and he was John Mitchell.
