Hi everyone, being a 'new girl' if I make any mistakes, perhaps some kind soul will point me in the right direction!
My great grandfather, William Ward, ended his life at the Admiralty Pier in Dover on the 24th April 1890. I have the Death Certificate giving the facts but was wondering whether the event would have been reported in the local newspaper of that time.
I have visited various sites which keep newspaper archives but as yet have not had any success in tracking down a report.
With many thanks.

Hi
Try the Records Office where it happened, they could have either the newspapers on film or even have real newspapers. Give them a ring and ask, they are usualy most helpful. If their was an Inquest the Coroners report will be reported in the local news papers before 1900.

Try East Kent Archives

They can be contacted by e-mail.

Just to give you an alternative - If you are anywher near to it, the British Library newspaper archive is at the Colindale Library (http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspapers.html)

Thank you Geoffers for your suggestion but I fear I would not be able to travel there. I have therefore just emailed the East Kent Archives and will await their reply.
With many thanks, Maureen.

Gosh. I wouldn't have thought Dover was going to be easier to get to than Colindale.
Although Kent Archive Service is my local record office, I haven't any idea what their newspaper collecting policy is. I really must ask them sometime :o
Both Kent Archives Service and the British Library have their own research services; independent researchers will be cheaper ;).

Many thanks for your information. I had already looked at the two sites you mentioned but before I start making visits anywhere I am going to see what the East Kent Archives say first. In any case travelling to Dover would definitely be my first choice should I wish to make one.
Regards.

I would like to thank everyone for their advice on my above query. I have duly followed it all up and am now in possession of a copy of the report from the relevant newspaper. It was very detailed and gave me an insight as to what had happened all those years ago.
I have also managed to obtain a copy of the actual Coroner's Report and although the verdict is as stated on the Certificate, this again, was very interesting historically as it showed all the signatures of the jurors and the seals by each name. I had just expected a single sheet of paper but was pleasantly surprised to find I had received three large pages.
The Kent Archives Centre from whence the documents came have been extremely helpful in my quest and they are to be commended.
Best wishes, Maureen.
