Can anyone help me find my lost families?
Richard Edward Orton born 1852 Wapping. Occupations variously given as Gas labourer/Gas stoker/Iron plate worker/Carman
Margaret Breathwaite Orton his wife.Born 1852 Kingsland
Married in Stepney in 1875. 4 Portland Street.
Margaret Orton daughter born 1878 Mile End
John Orton son born 1880 Bromley by Bow at 16 Hawthorn Dwellings.

I have Richards birth cert and I have his parents on the 1851 census (Charles J Orton - butcher {brother to Tichbourn Claimant} & Ann Susan @ 6 Russells Buildings, St Georges In The East)

I have the address of St Georges Street for Charles J Orton in 1861 when he re-married Ester on April 2nd. I have no access to 1861 - can anyone find him and his son Richard or suggest which census piece to buy?
I can't find Charles J Orton with wife Ester on the 1871 ancestry census

The family of Richard Edward Orton vanish until the 1891 census living at 33 Mountfield road, East Ham.
I can't find any of them on the 1881.
Does anyone know if records from that area are missing or can anyone find them for me or suggest which census piece to buy?

I can find Richards family on the 1901, still in East Ham.

Very grateful if anyone can find any of my lost ones or suggest other avenues.

Sorry didn't get back to you quicker, Time of year etc. Many apologies.

Charles Orton married Hester Brand April 2 1861 at Christ Church, Parish of St George In the East.

He had married his first wife Ann Susan Adlard Dec 1 1850. In Bermondsey.

Much appreciated

Thanks Mythology.
Thats one of them found at any rate.
I'm a bit baffled myself that he's become Horton rather than Orton, there was no reason in 1861 for a change of his name as his parents were fairly comfortably off running a successful business. Possibly the enumerator just wrote it incorrectly. After his brother Arthur came home from Tasmania and the whole Tichborne Claimant thing started up I would have been suprised if Charles hadn't changed his name but that wasn't till 1865/66.
Thank you for the time & trouble you took in finding this bit of the family.
Esp for finding Matilda - I only knew she existed from a later mention on his death papers from Australia. I had hunted for a Matilda Orton birth but not knowing the age made that a bit of a needle in a haystack job.

Again many thanks.:)

Thanks to Mythology I have got one of my lost ones :) .
But can anyone help with the missing ones from 1881?

In particular I would like to find John Edward Orton (born 21st feb 1880 @ 16 Hawthorn Dwellings, Bromley, Poplar) along with his father Richard Edward Orton born 1852 St Georges in The East, his Mother Margaret Breathwaite Orton born 1852 Kingsland(Margaret B Orton on 1891 census) and his older sister Margaret Adlard Orton born 1878 Mile End.
Does anyone have the 1881 census piece for Poplar/Bromley and could check if Hawthorn Dwellings still existed by the census date. If so are they still living there?
I can't find them under Horton or Orton on IGI or ancestry 1881 census.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Di and Trev

Only just notice this thread- have a side interest in the Ortons from Wapping

After all your research a bit suprised that you were not aware of the famous (or infamous) Cockney problem with "Haspirates". this may not have been a change of name as such- just a question of pronunciation.

Cheers..Ed

Hi Ed, I was aware of the h problem, Didn't have the 1861 census in any case. And can't find this particular family in 1881 under Orton, Horton, Oerton, Oughton, or (as another branch turned up) Morton. My cousin is an Orton still living in London and neither of us can find Richard Edward Orton. He is the g/g/grandfather of both of us.
In general though, may I ask what your side interest is? Apart from this 1881 census we have a fair bit of info between us. We might have something useful to share. Still hunting for Charles Ortons' marriage to Mary Kent though.I get the feeling that will be a real needle in haystack job. :(
Regards
Diane

This evening. looking at FreeBMD, the wife appears to have been Margaret Breathwaite JENKINS ... so not the right Census entry then.

Sorry about that. I have the family on the 1901 census. At the 1871 census Richard would have been unmarried. Can't find him yet - there are a couple of possibles but nothing certain. Margaret Breathwaite Jenkins was living with her parents on the 1871 at 142 St Georges Street, St Georges in the East.
Thank you for looking. Sorry it wasn't the right entry though.
