my grandmother was Marjorie Lettice (Napier) Ewing. her father was Gilbert Napier Ewing and her mother was Edith Jane Evans. they were both married before. her father had 2 sons Gilbert jr.and Archibald Ewing. Her mother also had 2 sons Howard and Leonard Edwards.they had 3 children together.
1 son Colin and 2 daughters Winifred and Marjorie. At about the ages of 5 &6 my grandmother and her sister were put in a convent in london and raised by the nuns. She saw her father a few times and then he stopped coming, they never saw him or any of her brothers ever again. Her sister married a BBC announcer and had a son . My grandmother came to Canada and married
my grandfather Lewis Ellison. my grandfather was in the war and met my grandmother's sister once, he went back a second time and her home was gone. we don't know what happen to any of my grandmother's family.I know her brother Archibald survived the WW1 and married Lily Allen in 1918 in Bristol. Her brother Gilbert died in WW1. don't know what happen to her brothers Howard and Leonard Edwards?
any information would be greatly appreciated Judy

Gilbert Napier Ewing was an engineer and inventor - see
http://www.wikipatents.com/gb/225901.html and
http://v3.espacenet.com/textdoc?DB=EPODOC&IDX=GB225901&F=0
The description of the patent in the second reference gives his address as 59 Corporation Buildings, Farringdon Road, London, EC1. You can also see the original document online.

Gilbert Napier Ewing's birth was registered in March qtr. 1869, Clerkenwell, Vol.1b, page 649. He appears in the 1901 census age 33, Electrical Engineer, with (second) wife Jane 30, sons Gilbert 8, and Archibald 6, and step-sons Howard Edwards 8 and Leonard Edwards 5. The Electrical Engineer description fits with the patent, which is for an electrical invention, and Gilbert would have been age 54 in 1923 when the patent was issued, so probably still working.
Unless you can find the birth of another Gilbert Napier Ewing, the only other candidate might be his son (also Gilbert Napier Ewing), whose birth is registered in December qtr. 1892, Islington, Vol.1b, page 183. But he died in WWI, and the CWGC site gives his date of death as 27 October 1914.
However, have you noticed that Gilbert junior's entry on CWGC describes him as
"Son of Mrs. M. Paintin (formerly Ewing) of 24, Ashbrook Rd., Upper Holloway, London"? That suggests that Gilbert Napier Ewing's first marriage ended in divorce.
Incidentally, Archibald Napier Ewing joined the Army in 1911 and was invalided out in 1916. His Army records fill 10 pages, and can be seen online in the British Army WWI Pension records on A******y. His next of kin are listed as his father and brother, both Gilbert Napier Ewing, at 112 Victoria Dwellings, Clerkenwell Rd., (London). Seems he had a chequered career in the Army, serving in three regiments, and being absent without leave several times. The papers include a description of how he was wounded.

My grandmother came to Canada and married my grandfather Lewis Ellison.
There is an entry for Marjorie Ewing, Domestic, age 24, of 6 High St., Camden Town, (London), on the passenger list of the Cunard liner Ascania which sailed from Southampton to Halifax (and New York) on 10 February 1930. You can view this on the pay site at Findmypast.

FreeBMD has an entry for the death of Edith J Ewing, age 44, in June qtr. 1915 in Islington registration district, Vol.1b, page 262.
The 1901 census shows (Edith) Jane as born Regent Street, London. FreeBMD has an entry for the birth of Edith Jane Evans in June qtr. 1872 in Pancras reg. district, Vol.1b, page 152. You can order a copy of the birth certificate online from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ and this will give you the name of Edith Jane's parents. You may also be able to find the family in the 1881 and 1891 censuses.

You could try searching at FreeBMD, which is almost complete for the period you are interested in, or at one of the pay sites that offer the full BMD indexes.

WWI Medal record cards for both Archibald N Ewing and Gilbert Ewing can be found at both The National Archives and A******y. The images from A******y are better, as they show both front and back of the cards. In Gilbert's case the back of the card shows that the father applied for his deceased son's medals, and gives his address.
