Thanks to encouraging replies, I have managed to trace some ancestors with reasonable certainty back to their births in 1786. Please can someone tell me how I can progress further back?!

It does get considerably more difficult, particularly as you are in New Zealand and can't easily access local county record offices. Basically you need parish registers, wills, settlement records etc. Many CDs of parish records have been produced at reasonable cost, and it is a good idea to join the local Family History Society for the county where your ancestors came from. Many of them have indexed local records, and at the very least you can advertise your search for free in their journal. Click on the Parish Chest logo at the top of this page and see what is available. If the FHS you need is not one that uses Parish Chest, then go to website of the Federation of Family History Societies.

Oops. Just realised you have posted this in the Gloucestershire forum.

Google Gloucestershire Family History Society

Hi

Gloucestershire isnt the easiest area to search, I have several members of my tree from there, where exactly are yours from and I will see if I know of any links.

Thanks Sue. I've just followed your advice and find that CDs are very reasonable. They seem like a good way to go when working from a distance.:)

Thank you Brian. My relatives were mainly from Westerleigh (with the odd immigrant from other areas close by) but they mainly appeared to have stayed in Westerleigh.
