Hello
I am trying to get more information about my Great Grandafather who is shown on the 1861 census as being a Police Officer in Leicester and later on the 1871 census as being a prison officer at Wakefield Prison.

Is it possible to find work records and photographs anywhere please?.

Thanks
MrsP

Hi,
You could try getting hold of a copy of 'Peelers to Pandas: an illustrated history of the Leicester city police' by Ben Beazley. I suspect records for the police are held at Kew, but you could always give Leicestershire Record Office a ring and see if they have anything that might help.
Where was he living in 1861? It's possible the area is still around and it may help identify where he worked.

Thanks for this Angela. I have him living in Rutland Road, Leicester when he was a Policeman. I'll contact the address you have given. Thanks for the idea of the book too.

Anguline Research Archives have scanned the book The Annals of Wakefield House of Correction (ARA 78) available from Parish Chest.

It may contain all yo wish to know about Wakefield Prison.

Hi,
I don't know about a Rutland Road, even on the old maps I've got. There is, however, a Rutland Street which is in the city centre.

Angela

I am very sorry, I can only attribute it to a 'senior' moment. It is indeed Rutland Street.

Many apologies
