My ancestor was John Mathews of Canterbury (1737-1803). I am trying to determine if the trade tokens (coins) of 1794/5 were issued by him
Also, he may later have lived at the bishop's palace. Is there a list of people who officially worked at the Cathedral?

There is quite a bit about them if you google. I also found John Mathews halfpennies for sale at auction.
This site has a picture and description. Unfortunately, in his case, it does not mention his trade so I don't know if he is your fellow or not.

Thanks
i am aware of the site and others like it, but none give his trade. Also, a coin trader in the states says it is Matthews and not Mathews, which would make it worthless to me - yet all the books and websites I have found spell it with one "t" and dont list the trade.....
