Can anyone help with tracing my husbands grandmother. We believe she is on the 1901 census in the Industrial School for Girls, Northenden Road, Sale, Cheshire aged 15. Her birth place is unknown. Is there any records for this institution and do will it have records of her family? Her name was Annie Cartwright.

Thank you

Eileen W

Dear Eileen W

Sorry, I cannot help you with your query, but Northenden Road, Sale is very much alive as is Northenden (village) and Sale (town).

Northenden in yesteryear was very "select" and is still o.k.

Sale in yesteryear was even more "select" - today, it is still a "sought after" small town.

Hope this helps a little.

It is unlikely, I will be driving along Northenden Road until after Xmas. I will see if the aforementioned school building still exists but I cannot remember noticing it.

Regards

Jack (Richards)

The school is listed in the official 1901 site under the rather confusing title of "Manchester Certified Industrial School Girls Branch Sale". I suggest your first step is to go to 1901census at the National Archives and get her details from there before looking for records of the institution.

Thanks for your replies. I have looked at the 1901 census data for the school and Annie appears as an inmate aged 15, but birthplace unknown. It seems a very common name so dont really want to get a birth cert. until I am sure I have the right one. I have a father name - Peter (decd) - on her marriage cert. I cant find a record of him on the 1881 or 1901 census which looks a likely match. I am hoping that someone may have knowledge of any records that may be kept about such institution which may offer some light on the reason she was there and any family information.

Yes. Looked there! There is some paperwork for the Manchester Industrial school but before Annies time. Manchester was Certified 8th April 1857. Re-certified 1859 for 200 boys and girls. After 1872 it became boys only, still accommodating 200. The girls were sent to SALE, on 24th April 1877. purpose-built premises. Cessation of certification or closure 1922.

Industrial School for girls, Northenden Rd. Sale. Erected in 1870. Certified 21st April 1877 for 100 girls. Re-certified in 1928 for 80 girls and 8 young boys. The school was run from Manchester. From 1933 it became an Approved School
