Please can anyone tell me what or where the Pleck and the Common were in Sidemoor, Bromsgrove? They appear in census returns but I can't find a modern equivalent.
Thanks
Martin

Hello
I don't know the answer, but have you tried the old 6" OS map available online at:
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/welcome.htm
The maps do name some streets and open spaces such as commons.
When you search and click on a name to display a map, look towards the bottom of the screen and you'll see a link 'enlarged image'. Select this to display a full size map.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had already tried the online map, but the street names were illegible so I bought a copy and downloaded it. This has the street names, but none of them are the Pleck or the Common. I suspect that the Common is a nickname for Broad Street. I have no idea where the Pleck might be.

Martin
The only Pleck I have heard of is just outside Walsall in the West Midlands, (staffs)

Please see the email I sent to your other thread (Looking for Bromsgrove local knowledge) yesterday. You afre correct in your assumption that The Common was a nick-name for Broad Street.

well, living in Broad Street, the Pleck Stores were at the south end, directly opposite Broad Street in Crabtree Lane, and have recently been tastefully redevloped as commended business offices. I believe the Pleck was the area behind, now Willow Gardens estate. Sidemoor was separated from Bromsgrove town by the Racecourse, on the Common, essentially east of Broad Street which bisected Sidemoor.

The only time that I have ever heard the term "pleck" was at the old brickworks off Bromsgrove Road, Redditch during the 1950's. The word was used as the name of a small unique level grass covered area cut off from the main areas of the site. For those that don't know the area this location is about 6 miles from Sidemoor.
