I haven't found them yet in the 1861 Census.I found them on the 1871 Census at RG 10 4032 f80.It really does not give to many clues.Do you know when and where they got married? Howabout Sarah's maiden name? It is possible that William was in Peterboro for the 1851 Census.

Hi UK.

Sorry dont know where or when William and Sarah Ann married. However,
there first child Lucy was born in 1867 in Manchester and I suppose its posible William was in Peterborough in 1851 or even 1861.

Unfortunatley have no idea of Sarah Anns maiden name, not having been able to trace marriage detail.

Sorry for the mis-information re-posible marriage date in initial post.

I am about to send for Williams Birth Certificate and also Sarah Anns Death certificate (Died age 49 in 1891) 8d 247 June 1/4 just after the 1891 Census.
This cert should give her maiden name I hope.

William was not around for the 1891 Census, and to date have not traced his where abouts. Posibly deceased.
Thanking you for your endeavourers

I am almost certain that they did not get married at Man Cath.So unless they were married at MRO(Manchester Register Office),they possibly got married in the Ancoats area. Were they CofE or RC or something else?

I Believe William and Sarah were living @ 9 Solon St Ancoats in 1868/1869.

The familys history shows religion as C of E

Williams Occupation was Bricklayer and I have trawled the Trade Directories on-line trying to find the address and the trade reference with not a great deal of luck, apart from I believe Solon Street was ajacent to Helena St,Holt Town.(Top of Every Street?)

Hi There,

I managed to find the marriage of William & Sarah Ann.

1865 Marriage Solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of St Philip,Manchester.Nov 8th
William PHILLIPS,22 Bachelor,Bricklayer,Solon St.Father,William PHILLIPS,Bricklayer &
Sarah Ann LIXON,21,St.Father,John LIXON,Carder.Married...after Banns...Witnessess,Stephen OLIVER & Margaret WALSH.

Sarah did not sign her name and therefore made her mark.I can't see any refs to the name LIXON,other than one in the 1871 Welsh Census.I have a sneaking feeling that the Minister could have misheard the name or maybe even he was deaf and that the name should be DIXON,DICKSON,NIXON or any other IXON combination.
So I am afraid it does not really help you with your search for their 1851 & 1861 Cenus returns.

Hi UK.
I have recently received my grandfathers birth certificate and you are spot on with the surname of my greatgrand mother, her name listed as Sarah Ann Nixon.
Your information also gave me my g/grandfathers names which I didnt have, also didnt have my grand parents married detail.
Thank you

Thanks for letting me know that her name was NIXON.It's nice to know the old grey matter still works.

I've just noticed that Philo's William Phillips and Sarah Ann Nixon, who had married at St Philips on November 8th 1865, were living at 9 Solon Street Ancoats in 1868/69.

My maternal grandfathers mother was Frances Higgins Nixon (usually known as Fanny), who was born at 9 Solon Street on 15th August 1867 daughter of Ann Nixon (and I suspect illegitimate as no father is named on the birth certificate).

Ann Nixon subsequently married Joseph Sumner at St. Philips on 26 May 1874, both giving their address as 152 Pollard Street. On the 1881 and 1891 censuses (and 1901 census after Joseph's death) they were living at 34 Burns Street, which was the address given when Frances Nixon married my great grandfather James Fletcher on 25 December 1891 at Christ Church Bradford Manchester. Frances gave her father's name on her marriage certificate as Robert Nixon (an India Rubber Dresser) but I'm almost sure that this is not correct.

Incidentally the two witnesses when Ann Nixon married Joseph Sumner were Edward Partington and Fanny Partington, whom I think must have been the Edward Partington and Fanny Nixon who had married at St. Philips on 20th August 1870, both giving their address as Solon Street!

Unfortunately the Nixon connection with Solon Street seems to have ended by the date of the 1871 census, when a different family is living at number 9. There is also a different family there in 1861 - most frustrating!

I've found what I think is the relevant Nixon family on the 1841 and 1851 censuses, but have so far been unable to trace them on the 1861 or 1871.

If Philo or anyone else interested in the Nixon connection with 9 Solon Street would let me know I'd be happy to pass on what information I've got.
