This is a quiz especially for the Newbies out there. Not necessarily new to Brit-Gen, but those of you who are just starting out on your journey into the past.

The prize is the book "Introducing Family History", donated by the Family History Partnership (http://www.parishchest.com/shop/index.php?cmd=listlinkeditems&cat=D6786&breadcrumb=Genealogy+Help+Books+%26+CDs:Family+His tory+Partnership). Scroll down to about halfway for further details.

The prize is a fantastic resource for those of you who are still feeling your way around what to do, where to look and how to do it.

Closing date is Midnight on Sunday 11 May (BST) Please PM me your answers by that date and time.

Some of the questions are easy, others may be a little harder. But hopefully you may learn something new along the way.

1.Which online site offers free access to most of the birth, marriage and death registrations?
2.Where is The National Archives (TNA) based?
3.On which date(s) did the 1881 census take place?
4.On which date did registration for births, marriages and deaths start in England and Wales?
5.For people aged 15 and over, the 1841 census rounded ages down. By how many years?
6.Where is the British Library’s Newspaper Reading Room?
7.You have the name and year of the person whose birth certificate you want. Which 3 other things will help you to hopefully order the correct one?
8.What are MIs?
9.Who sponsors British-Genealogy.com?
10.What would be the occupation of a Maltster?
11.What is referred to, in England and Wales, by the initials GRO?
12.What is another name for a “House of Industry”?
13.A common cause of death used to be Consumption. By what name is this now better known?
14.What are Bishops Transcripts?
15.Where in London may you obtain copies of wills from 1858?

Tie breaker:
I’ve started researching my family history because (in no more than 10 more words)……………………………..............................

Good luck to you all ;) and have fun!

I do not know half of these answers so i have printed it out and i will bring it to the WDYTYA show in the morning. What a perfect place to get the answers! It will give me a great talking point as i am a bit shy!

P.S. I promise not to ask my mum (mutley) for the answers. |help|

Hi Chocolate, |wave|
Perhaps best not to ask your mum anyway, because the way I read her post in the 'oldies' quiz she was a bit useless at that one. :D (Mind you I wasn't much better, getting half of my answers by going 'eeny meeny miny mo'. :D:D )

I have finally finished, that was hard work, but i did enjoy it! As i am a total newbie, i took the quiz to the WDYTYA yesterday and asked the experts. You would be amazed how many did not have the answers. I won't tell what some experts thought an "MI" was! A very nice man on the National Achieves stand put me right, and that was an hour after going round the military section as i was told it was to do with WW1, well i supoose it is connected now i know the answer!

Will PM my answers over and fingers crossed! Even if i do not win, this was a great intro to family history and a good talking point, so thank you very much.

Good luck.

So, after a day driving an ambulance, Mr P has come in and made his decision.

He has decided that, with the tie-break of "I was nosey about a 110 year old marriage certificate" the winner is....

Hi all

Thank you all for your posts :)

The biggest thanks must go to Jan for compiling such an educational comp :) I did learn a few things from it.

I would have preferred MI's (question 8) to have had the answer Missing Individuals, as I have quite a few of them :D

But thank you again & I love this forum
