Hiya
I've been doing a bit of digging into my gggrandfathers family and have hit a bit of a brickwall(although i did only start looking yesterday!).
Anyway, i cannot find them in the 1841 or 1851 census but they appear in the 1861 census with there children, most of whom are under 10 except their eldest William who is 16 and it states he was born in North America.
I can't find a marriage entry for them either so i'm wondering if maybe at some point they went over to the States, got married and had their son there and came home?
I wonder if someone could look and see if they appear in any census over in the states for me please?
The info i have is:
Charles wild born c1823
Harriett Wild born c1824
Both were born in Sheffield, England

Thankyou

Do you have a maiden name for Harriet?

Part of the problem is that in the UK the place of birth is only given as 'North America' (although I see that William is on the 1871 census as having been born in the United States, so at least we know it wasn't Canada), but in the US census returns the place of birth would just be given as England.

Couldn't immediately find any likely candidates in th US census. However, in the 1850 census for Williamsburg, New York I did find the following entry, which given the Shefield connection with cutlery did look interesting.

Mark WILD 23 Cutler b England
Harriet WILD 25 England
no children

There were also three families of WILDs living in Stockport, Columbia County New York, the heads all born in England and described as manufacturers, the children all born in NY (except for a 22 year old Harriet born in England)

Thankyou for looking for me Sue.
I don't have a maiden name i'm afraid cause i cannot find a marriage entry for them. I have sent off for a birth certificate for one of their sons so should know it next week.
Like you say the 1850 entry is interesting but her age is out by about 10 yrs and no mention of Charles or William.

Also Sue, it says in the 1881 census that William was born i New York, United States

Either your maths is wonky or mine is :D Surely if she was born c 1824 then being 25 in 1850 is pretty close?

Post the maiden name here when you get it

Have just had a look at the index of ships arriving in New York. There is a ship indexed as the Washington (with a question mark after the name) which arrived on Sept 4 1843 from Liverpool. The index lists both a Charles Wild (with question mark) aged 21 and a Harriet Wild (also with question mark). The question marks would indicate that the writing was hard for the transcriber to read, but sadly there is no access to the original image. At first sight this would seem to indicate that they married before they left, but now I think Charles may have had a sister Harriet as well as a wife Harriet (they didn't make it easy, did they?) The Harriet I found with Mark (above) would seem to be the sister because the following all appear on the index of the passenger list for the Washington:
Ebenezer WILD 45
Harriet WILD 46
Charles WILD 21
Harriet WILD 20
Alice WILD 15
Mark WILD 14

Ebenezer WILD appears with wife Harriet and daughter Alice on the 1850 census for Williamsburg NY and is described as a cutler.

On the 1841 census for Broad Lane Sheffield HO107/1335/3 f13 pp18&19 we can find, all born in county (remember ages rounded to nearest 5):
Ebenezer WILD 45 Pen k cutler
Harriet WILD 40
Emma WILD 20 Dressm
Sarah WILD 20 Straw bonnet m
Charles WILD 15 Pen k cutler
Mark WILD 13
Alice WILD 4

Food for thought?

Hi Sue
Thats brilliant thankyou!!!!
What's makes you think he had a sister Harriett as well?? Wouldn't the people on the ship have been Charles and harriett man and wife?
On the census where it stated :

Mark WILD 23 Cutler b England
Harriet WILD 25 England
no children

-maybe they were brother and sister in law??
Clutching at straws really!

Have just found the ship's list on another index, this time with a link to the actual image. The ship was the George Washington and it looks like the daughter Emma went as well along with her husband. I will e-mail you the image.
