What would be the best way to obtain a death cert for someone who died at sea, but apparently not in wartime. He was in the Royal Navy and died around the mid 1930's - don't know his ship or where he was at the time.

Thank you,
drifter.

You might find him in the Marine Deaths Index which can be seen onlone at findmypast, and also in County Record offices on fiches. With a reference from there, you can obtain a copy of the certificate from the GRO via their web-site.

Was he an officer or other rank?

Do you know if he died on an RN ship?

Do you have his service record?

Hi Geoffers,

I don't think he was an officer and I have no details other than he died at sea and may have been brought home for burial.
Not much to go on I know but all ideas are most welcome.

I will try the county archives and see what that turns up.

You might then first try the GRO index to marine deaths 1903-1965 as a starter

I have finally got a copy of the death certificate I was after and all I need now is to find where the ship was at the time.

The ship was HMS Revenge and the date was 1st May 1927.

Does anyone out there have the answer please?

You'll be needing the ship's log in ADM 53 at the National Archives.

The file you want would seem to be:

ADM 53/82789 REVENGE 1926 Nov. 18 - 1927 Dec. 4

The Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, King's College London seems to have quite a bit of information.

This site has the history including some pictures of her and the crews.

It takes a few minutes to load, be patient :)

I think she was part of the Atlantic fleet in 1927, prior to refit the following year. The Navy List (TNL) should tell you her station - partial runs of TNL can often be found at larger reference libraries. For precise location though, you will as mentioned, need to go to Kew.

Thanks everyone,

unfortunately I cannot get to Kew, but it seems from your responses and what I've read that the Atlantic fleet was the most likely.

Again thank you all for your help.
