I have been overhauling my family tree and have found a number of people who are not related to me except by marriage. The resulting relationships confuse me. For example, (without going into specifics)a female blood relative marries a male member of another family. Their sons are my 1st cousins once removed and their children are my 2nd cousins. However, according to Family Tree Maker, the husband is only related by being the 'husband of my great aunt' and his father is not related to me at all. Having said that, his father is the great grandfather of my 2nd cousin. He is essentially a relative of a relative - or should I say he is a blood relative of a person who is a blood relative of mine - but different blood! Could someone please explain to me (in very simple terms) what the hell it all means?

Hi

I'm with you on this one :)

I have no idea about it either e.g 2nd cousin once removed

I know who my cousins are, but as far as extended family it is a mine field.
I often shoot myself in the foot trying to work it all out

I look forward to an easy explanayion too :)

www.devonfhs.org.uk/tools.htm is the only one I can come up with for relationship tools.

I printed it out, then found that saving it in Adobe kept it on one page.
Tribalpages is to develop a relationship tool as it too gives " grandfather's brother's wife" c*** as well. And I want to know who is who and I have no understanding of the technicalities of it all. Parish Chest may have one, I don't know

The short answer is "No". You need to work from the common ancestor; in this case 1st cousins once removed would be the 2nd Great Grandson/daughter and the Grandson/daughter of the common ancestor.
Third cousins would be the Second Great Grandson/daughter and the Second Grandson/daughter of the common ancestor.
Going back to the original question, if there isn't a common ancestor, then people are only related by marriage. My Mum's/Dad's Brother is my Uncle, his wife is an Aunt by marriage. My Mum's/Dad's Sister is my Aunt, her husband is an Uncle by marriage. Clear as mud.
