According to the Macclesfield Eyre Roll of 1286

Honde the Seynur (what sort of occupation was that?) of Wytehalh and William son of John of the well stole six lambs from John the Anker and fled the country (into Wales or abroad????).

It is also listed as a Presentment by the township of Disteleg'

Can anyone enlighten a Salopian as to where these places are?

Peter

...and fled the country (into Wales or abroad????)...

Hi Peter,

In the past the word country was used where we would today say county. So "fled the country" could simply mean that the individual fled the county to a boardering county.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Kirsty :)

If you're still here, Bristol - Honde the Seynur undoubtedly refers to Honde the senior - meaning there was a father and son named Honde at the time in the same little village. Wytehalh is no doubt White Hall and 'The Well' will refer to some obscure piece of land known to locals by that name, probably.

Disteleg is more interesting - it could be a very early reference to Disley.

By now, though, you have probably contacted the authorities listed by UKsearch and found out what you need to know.
