Hi Everyone
Family lore has it that my Gt Gt Grandfather, Frederick William Sparham or my Gt Grandfather Arthur William Sparham were publicans of The Black Horse in Gravesend. I know this is not hugely informative, but if anyone from that area could give me the addresses of Black Horse Pubs I would be so grateful.
Thank you, Lynda |5cups|

Hello Lynda,
What sort of time frame are we talking about here?
Thanks,

1880's to about 1911 when my poor old Gt Gt Grandad expired in the Workhouse in Gravesend.

Just found this in The Essex, Herts, Kent & Sussex 1855 Publican Directory:
Black Horse, W SAPEY, 53 High street, Gravesend
PS: Whoops - a bit too early... but the address should be the same (I hope)

Well, I've had a look in the Public Houses, Inns & Taverns of Gravesend but it seems that 53 High Street had 2 changes of name - to the Royal Jubilee and the Royal Yacht.
The page is here:
http://londonpublichouse.com/KentPubs/Gravesend/gravesend.shtml
It is a list of all the pubs etc in Gravesend and there's no Black Horse amongst them :(

Hi Jan
Thanks so much for your help. I will go back to the drawing board, mainly Aunt Pat lol and see if I got it wrong.

Lynda
Have you found him in Gravesend in the 1891 census?
In Pigot's Directory of Kent 1840 the Black Horse at Gravesend was at 52 High Street and the Landlord was Thomas King.
Sorry, I know this is before his time but if someone has a later directory it would say who the landlord was.

Hi Mutley - thanks once again for your help. Looked in the 1891 C, he is living with his son in Prittlewell Southend. In the 1901 C, he is, alas, an inmate at the Gravesend and Milton Union Work House. In the 1881 C he is in Hackney and is a Journalist. He must have managed his Pub (if he ever did) in between Census lol. None of the Censuses show him as Publican. Maybe someone in my family got it wrong. I have often found stories to be true but the person quoted is very often not - will have to do some more research.
