Here's hoping someone can help me with this
Their father John KAY was an under Gamekeeper at Hardwick Hall and both theboys moved to Staveley and became coalminers. Thomas moved first and married a local girl Mary Rodgers in 1869.
Mary's father John, was also a coalminer and they lived at 85 Cottage Blocks.
By 1881 John (Thomas's brother)was also living with them, aged 20 he was a Labourer at the Coalmine. They now lived at 87 Blocks Speedwell Terrace. I have assumed that they worked at Ireland Colliery as that was almost across the road?
In 1882 John also marries a local girl, Alice Gascoyne daughter of Frank
Gascoyne, also a miner.
1891 Thomas has moved to 168 Chesterfield Rd although he is still working in
the mine. He and Mary have four children, Albert, Mary E, Janet and John W.
His brother John and Alice live at 19 Speedwell Terace and they have two
little girls, Eleanor and Violet Ann.
1901 Thomas (aged 52yr)s and Mary have moved to 180 Chesterfield Rd, he is now described as a Coalminer Hewer? Living with them are Janet, John W and Norah.
In 1892 their son Albert married Mary Smith of the Angel Inn whose father
was Joseph Smith a Publican. However it was her stepfather John Keeling who was the Innkeeper?
Albert became a Professional Footballer and on the 1901census he is living
in Romford, Essex and playing for West Ham. They have three children
Kenneth, Ada and Nellie and by the way they have now added an 'E' to their
surname, KAYE.
Their daughter Mary E in 1894 married George H Smith a coalminer hewer. In
1901they live at 14 Inkersall Lane and have four children, Elsie K, Ida F,
Lillian and Harry.
John Kay (aged 40 yr)s is now at 110 Speedwell Terrace with Alice and their
six children, Eleanor, Violet, Bertie, Percy, George, and Albert.
Sorry the above is so 'long winded' but after the 1901 census I do not kinow
where to look for them. Can anyone give me any pointers as to where to look
next. Are there records of Coalminers?. They were both married at St John
the Baptist in Staveley, is there anyone locally who could look up their
deaths for me? I would be most grateful for any advice.
Regards.........................Sylvia
