Where are you looking for the birth records? Have you found the family on the censuses? What is the name of his mother?

Have you looked on ScotlandsPeople?

There may be an error in his military records (not unknown to say the least!)
Your gr-uncle was "James John" perhaps this created a confusion, could his father's name be James rather than John?
There's a likely family in Glasgow 1891 and 1901.
1891 31 New Keppochhill Road, Springburn Glasgow
James Cairns 40 police sergeant
Mary wife 37
James J. 12
Emily 6
David 3
Percival 1

1901 356 Byars Road Partick, Glasgow
James Cairns 49 police inspector
Mary wife 47
James J. 22
Emily 16
David 13
Percival 11
Mabel 8
George 6

Hello Joette Yes I have registered with Scotlands People and it is helpful I am getting there very slowly with this Grandfather's family but there is a Canadian connection so that will take me way off in another direction I guess.Oh well no chance of getting bored is there!! Thanks Eliza.|banghead|
