Hi,
my name is Noreen and I've been intermittently researching my family history for a few years. I've made progress recently with my dad's side. His family came from Westfield and Battle in Sussex and his parents' names were Sabina Stunt and Henry Carey. I've met a 'new' cousin in the UK, and had contact with cousins in the US that I knew nothing about. I find it very interesting and it reminds me of fitting pieces of a very large jigsaw together! I've just discovered this site and it looks really interesting and helpful. I look forward to learning more and hopefully being able to contribute as well.

Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums

Grab a cuppa and sit down to a good long browse in comfort.

If you get stuck, ask - there are lots of people here who like to answer queries.

Hello again,

thanks very much for the welcomes. I think I'm going to enjoy it here:-) I do have a query, and I'm not sure where to post it. If this is the wrong place please advise me. I have been tracing my mother's side of the family and I have hit a brick wall with Daniel Mabb. He moved to Oldham, from Bridport, and was a saddler there. His wife was Mary and his daughter was Caroline Maud Mary. He appears on the 1881 census but not the 1891, where his wife is listed as a widow. I've checked records on ancestry and findmypast for his death, but I can't find it anywhere. I've tried to check some death overseas records, just in case, but I still can't find anything. Is it possible that his death just wasn't registered? Is there anywhere else I can search? This is a piece of the jigsaw that I just can't find:-)!

It depends on the circumstances of his death, and if his wife was telling the truth as to her marital status.

He could have died in transit and his body not been identified.

He could have run off and his wife claimed to be a widow - similar claim is sometimes made where a husband/wife ends up in an asylum.

But do check for variant spellings MAB, MABBE, MOB, MOBB, etc.

Did he leave a will? It is sometimes easier to trace someone in the calendar of probate and admons returns than in the GRO index.

Does he appear in any directories, to help narrow down the period in which he dispappeared?
