View Full Version : Confused over indexing. Any ideas?

I have just been looking up the index reference so I can order a birth certificate. On Ancestry there are two entries: Jessie Isabel Hammant/Jessie Isabel Ann For Hammant. Both are JFM quarter 1904, Dartford, Kent and have the same reference, so are obviously the same person.
I have just looked on the index on Find My Past and there is one reference: Same details, just Jessie Isabel Hammant.
Where did Ancestry get 'Ann' from, and what does 'For Hammant' mean?
Many thanks

It's never a bad idea to check the original :D.
I can see just Jessie Isabel HAMMANT. The other one is presumably just a transcription error.
It's better to use FreeBMD rather than Ancestry because it's always more up to date and has a more helpful search engine (when working at full power). It's also got better facilities to spot and diagnose problems like this

Ancestry is reflecting what's been entered into FreeBMD database and in this case a record has been entered by two separate people one of whom wrote something slightly different. Mistakes happen and maybe the person scribbled down something and forgot to erase it.

Thank you both, Peter and Chris, for your very speedy responses.:)
I am going to order the original anyway, it was just a little puzzling and I wondered if someone was working from a different record.
Many thanks

I've just looked at the original GRO index entry and it clearly says:
Hammant,
Jessie Isabel Dartford 2a/593
Who knows where Ancestry gets it's transcriptions:D

In this case, 'Angie' and 'nr' in FreeBMD ;)

The massive task of digitising and, making searchable, the names contained in the GRO indexes has been underway for a few years now. This database is made available to Ancestry.com users, courtesy of the volunteers of the FreeBMD organization. The leadership of FreeBMD have organized the permissions and tools necessary to enable thousands of volunteers to convert to electronic text, and publish online, searchable indexes to the civil registrations in England and Wales. FreeBMD, has already indexed more than 111 million names between the years of 1837 and 1983, and more names continue to be added everyday. Ancestry will add to this database as FreeBMD provides more names.
When they say "courtesy of the volunteers", they omit to say that some volunteers were or are extremely peeved at the fruits of their labours being handed over to Ancestry.
