Funny the association of the names, Lucas and Bright. Lucas used to make car and bicycle headlamps, etc., Muddy.
I think the Courtneys were/are(?) a big land-owning family, I'm distantly affined to. I look it up.

There were a lot of Courtneys (and varied spellings) in Cornwall - particularly the mid-Cornwall area around where I live. Possibly connected to yours I suspect?
On the Lucas Electrics side of things, mentioned by Paul, we Brit Bike owners always referred to - Joe Lucas, Prince Of Darkness ;)
I believe they were from the Midlands though.

Hi...
Can you tell me anything about the Poole in your family? I'm looking for information on the family of Thomas Poole, born 1806 in Gloucestershire. Thomas was a mason who came to Canada in the 1820's. He's a |banghead|

Thanks Mark, my Courtney's (varied spellings) can be traced back circa 1605 in North Devon but where they came from before that time is still under investigation - some suspect a link to the Courtenay family who reside at Powderham, but so far no link has been established. I have noted the name in Cornwall and do wonder if there is a possiblity that there might be some connection; especially as the first names used are similar.:)
Lucas alias Bright is a long standing alias and th family can be traced using it on Wiltshire/Dorset border from the 16th century through to the middle of 19th. These Lucas' certainly had no connection to the Lucas firm who made various fittings for cars, motor bikes etc etc. |biggrin|

Thanks Paul, the family I am researching lived in North Devon and as you can see from the reply I posted for Mark, they can be traced living in the area back into the early 17th century.

Family history has Malinbury (sp?) which I believe was near Bristol??? He sailed from Liverpool to New York and when he didn't find work there he went to Upper Canada and found work in Toronto. He was my hubby's ggrandfather and the most interesting ancestor that I have found so far!!
It has been said he had at least 2 sisters back in england, but no one knows!

I'm away for the weekend, but look forward to hearing back if you think this is the same Poole family...
Thanks

Good one, Mark! I like a wry sense of humour. I've been an Edinburgher for many years now, but grew up in Enfield, Middlesex. A Greater London suburb.

Well, Muddy, I have a Sir Hugh Courtnay of Haccome, apparently in Newton Abbot Devon. We're obviously related from the days of yore.
He married Phillippa Ereckdene, co-heiress with her two sisters of their parents, Warin Ereckdene (succeeded) ob. 1390 and Elizabeth (ob. 1407) co-heir of Sir John Talbot of Castle Richard co Hereford ob. 1388.
Their parents were Sir John of Trebarwith ob. 1390 (knighted in 1342) and Cecilia, heiress of Jordan de Haccome (alias FitzStevens) of Cork in Ireland. (I think there's a whole history of the Norman of invasion and occupation of Ireland in his tree, including the connection with Gerald the Historian and his father (the patriarch, so to speak) Gerald de Barri, believed to have been Flemish.
His fortified manor still stands and can be visited in Manorbier, Pembrokeshire, South Wales. The Fitzgeralds are all descended from him, including the earls of Desmond and of Kildare.
Anyway, the tree I've got on the Ereckdenes goes back to Sir Michael Ereckdene of Trebarwith at Tintagel Co Cornwall in 1242.
I'll get a copy and send it to you if you email me your address. I saw a photo of the current Haccome House at Newton Abbot.

PS: Ereckdene = Archdeacon

Hi Sue
Don't think your Thomas has any connection to my Poole family who mainly come from Barnsley, in Gloucestershire. I have no record of a baptism of a Thomas in 1806 in that Parish.
You quote the place "Malinbury". I suspect that this is Malmesbury which is in Wiltshire - it is almost on the Wiltshire/Gloucestershire border. Incidentally, Malmesbury is some 30 miles from Bristol, 22 miles from the City of Gloucester and 15 miles from Swindon in Wiltshire. I do know that the Poole name features in and around the Malmesbury area. ;)
Good Luck

I've found another couple of Courtnays who lived in in Devon, Muddy, in a place called Powderham.
http://www.britainexpress.com/counties/devon/castles/powderham.htm
Here is another site on the Courtnays I found on Google:
http://www.powderham.co.uk/history-conservation-Powderham.htm
One was the second husband of an Elizabeth Sydenham, her first husband having been Sir Francis Drake - who could have given the Dude a run for his money when it came to bowls.
But it wold be too laborious and time-consuming for me to write out these pedigrees, so if you want them, you'll have to email me your address, so that I can post them to you. I don't have an optical character reader.

Hi Paul
Thanks for your input - the link with the Courtney (varied spellings) and Powderham castle is well known. Having searched for a possible link to my own Courtney family for the past 12 years; so far nothing has been found either by myself or other researchers of the same Courtney family from North Devon. The research is ongoing and perhaps one day a positive link will be discovered.
I have visited Powderham Castle and have a copy of the pedigree of the "Courtenay" family who reside there, which includes the Hugh Courtenay whom you mentioned in an earlier message.
I do appreciate your input but at present we just cannot find the piece of the jig saw that might join it all together. ;)

Thanks anyway Muddy....
I did find Malmesbury on a map and I think it may be the correct town. I know its along the border and I did once read it was part of Gloucestershire, but now its part of Wiltshire? Am I correct? I have yet to find proof of where he was born and I am just going by stuff that has been handed down through my husband's family........The search continues! The search is just difficult with the Atlantic Ocean in the way!!

Hi Sue
I think you will find that Malmesbury has always been a Wiltshire town. Have you tried looking on Family Search for a likely Thomas in Wiltshire.
Good luck

Hi Muddy,
whereabouts do your Bright/ Lucas or Lucas/Bright's come from?
I have one in my tree, her marriage says "Mary Lucas als Bright" - she married on 10 Sep 1761 in Pentridge. She was baptised in Pentridge 30 Nov 1740 to a John Lucas & Elizabeth...but I can't find any more about them.
Her husband was John Kerley, they had 9 children, one of whom, Cornelius Kerley b1776 married a Mary BRIGHT (born Woodyates, Dorset c 1781) & they had one daughter, Sarah.
Not content with that, he also fathered a daughter, Jane (in Bower Chalke - born 7 Oct 1825) - by a girl by the name of Elizabeth BRITE ( or BRIGHT).....
I can't find either of these on 1841 or subsequent census returns.
The link with Bower Chalke makes me wonder if all these Lucas/ Bright folk may have originated in Wiltshire.... and I wonder if they were related.
I haven't been able to find anything more about them - any of them ring a bell with you?

Hi Muddy,
No luck I'm afraid this time. None of the Frys match mine at the moment and the one Chorley I have married into my branch of the Frys but in Sampford Arundel.
Thanks for the information.

Probably not. I have an Annie Elizabeth Shayle who lived at Oldbury but she was connected to the Biddles by marriage - or was descended from a Harriet Biddle. Do you have any names? My Biddles started in Warwickshire but can be found all over.

Can't help with Annie Elizabeth Shayle, sorry and the only Harriet Biddle I have, was born in 1860 in Portishead.
Good luck with your searching
