Hello again

My GGGGG Grandfather was Richard DOWNING B: Abt 1755, possibly in Mawgan but I am not sure. He married Susanna JAMES 3 Aug 1784 at St Mawgan in Meneage. Richard died somewhere between the 27th and the 28th of March 1836 and was buried on the 29th in St Mawgan in Meneage. His son was Richard and his son was also Richard, all of them directly my Grandfathers. This is as far as I have reached, is anyone else researching the DOWNING's or the JAMES?

Hi Pam, Brian and Dipsey

Sorry for the slow response to your information, work, work work.

Thank you very much for those entries, it all goes together very well. I noticed that there is a Baptism on OPC referring to Mary Chalke, the date fits for her birth but am curious as to your thoughts? Also, when accepting information what is the best way to conclusively prove it to be correct? Can this be done or are you always left with a minimum of doubt?

Also, when mining began in Cornwall was there an influx of families from other counties? If so when roughly did this occur in case I need to start looking at other counties for records.

BAPTISM
MAWGAN MENEAGE
13-Jul 1735

Mary CHALKE
Philip & Elinor

Thanks

I think the only way you can confirm, is to visit the Local Library for the Towns History, Parish Records, old newspapers, Wills and visit the Local Graveyard/Cemetery to find the family.
Even after all that you can never be 100% certain they are connected.

Hi Irene

At this stage I don't see any direct link between the two. My Downing's were in the Meneage Peninsula pretty much confirmed from 1750's onwards. I am having trouble finding where he was born which might lead to Launceston. I will keep this updated as I go through my side.

Cheers

Brad thanks for the email unfortunately I cant trspond as your isp has a ban on mail incoming from yahoo.

As I said I have very little on this family at present Known facts
Sarah Downing marries Roger Crocker 1793 St.Stephens.

Children
Elizabeth Downing Crocker b 1797
Grace 1803 James 1808 John 1793 William 1805

Elizabeth Married Joseph david Maunder in 1817

Family moved to plymouth and seem to be tied into a fairly sucessful Perfumery.
1861 census shows a Matilda Crocker b1833-1839 launceston(cousin) living in perfumery at this time.
1841 census has her living with sarah at age of 4 so fear she may have been orphaned at a very young age

1861 census has a richard crocker b 1845 also living with maunders
If I can trace back matildas parentage and find the link to Elizabeth I may be able to establish Rogers parents so I guess Im looking for possible sibling of Roger
