Have you located him in censuses, to see if he has a relevant occupation, (assuming he was in the country, of course!).
I've found that often military occupations can be very precise, often including rank, regiment, etc. You may well be able to verify the information you have, and pinpoint the times he was serving. (Assuming the source wasn't a census in the first place, of course :o)
If you don't have access to all censuses, please post his details, and I'm sure we can look him up for you.

You'll need his service record from The National Archives at Kew. Have a look at these research guides (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1#b) - click on the links prefixed 'British Army'

Hi
I have checked all the Census records but nothing.
Out of curiosity, do you mean you have found him in censuses, but not with an obviously military occupation, or that you have been unable to find him in any census when he may have been serving ?
Alan
