Hi
My name is Helen Whitaker. I am researching my fathers family who were miners in Skinningrove.
I would be interested to know how to find out about inquests . I know I can look in local papers but would there be anywhere else that these records would be stored. The inquest was held in the chester ward of Durham .Many thanks
Helen

Hi Helen,

You can ask at a county records office, but in general the survival rates for coronors or inquest papers is extremely low. You would have to be unusually lucky to find any preserved (assuming we are talking a long while ago!).

If local newspapers survive, they are by far your best hope of finding useful information, I believe.

Alan

Thanks Alan. I didn't know if there was a central place just for inquests . I will have a go at that one day

Thanks
