I found this birth registration on Free BMD
1846 Mar Teesdale 24 346 - William Kirk
This is the year and quarter in which the birth was registered. 24 is the volume number and 346 the page number. Teesdale is the district (North Yorkshire) which covers Brignall.
This is the info that you need to order the birth certificate. If you don't know how to do this do ask.

This is the site where you can order the birth certificate. You will need to quote everything I put in the message earlier. I have checked the Free BMD reference and it is correct so this is the GRO birth index reference.
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
When you get the birth certificate it will give you the maiden name of the mother. Then you will be able to search the GRO marriage index for the marriage of the parents.
