I have located my g g g grandfather Christopher Haines b 1811 Stoke Milborough, Shropshire (does it still exist?). He married Caroline Flintoff b @1814 m @1835. Would someone look up Pallets Marriage Index for England please, as there is a record of their marriage therein

As her mother Jane was staying with the family at the time of the 1841 Census, I have part of her parents names and her birth 1781

Many thanks

Thanks for the information

What does Spouse Comments: 312 mean?
No more info than Marriage Date: 1835?
Parish: Westminster St James - does it say where this is, assuming it's not London Westminster
No mention of parents names?

Best wishes

Simon

What I've posted is the transcript, and I'm not sure I can explain it much further.

I've never made much use of Pallot's, and in my experience the actual index cards are often written in a kind of shorthand that you need some knowledge to be able to interpret. (Particularly the place, which is often in faint rubber stamp). I've never seen one name a an exact marriage date - I don't think they do, generally.

Subject to the limitations of formatting in these posts, I'll give you what's on the card

Flintoff Caroline (?Flintoft)

=Christr Haines

312 S JAS WM MR 1835

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's hand-written up to and including the 312, (which means nothing to me).
Thereafter it appears to be stampedin some way.
The stamped bit is all upper case, but in different sized letters

S JAS WM MR

Bold are big chacters, normal are smaller

It's fairly unusual for parents to be named pre 1837, so I'm not surprised they are not in an index.

Having just typed that lot, I though I'd try the IGI, and there it is as an extracted record....

CHRISTOPHER HAINES
Marriages:
Spouse: CAROLINE FLINTOFT
Marriage: 21 OCT 1835 Saint James, Westminster, London, England

Personally, until I could view the actual record, I'd put more faith in the IGI data.

Do you mean the 1841 census ?

Christopher & Caroline seem to be at Braintfield, Herts, with three children (presumably theirs ?).

But nobody else is in the household.

My mistake, I didn't look at the 1841 Census

1851 Census Bacons Farm Bramfield, Herts

Christopher 40 1811 b Stoke L Milborough, Shropshire Farmer with 80 acres and 2
labourers m 1835 d 1881?
Caroline (nee Flintoff) 37 1814 b Hampshire d 1878?
Henry 14 1837 b Hertingfordbury
Fanny 12 1839 b Hertingfordbury
Caroline 10 1840 b Bramfield
Jane 8 1843 b Bramfield
George 6 1845 b Bramfield
Arthur 4 1848 b Bramfield
Gregory 2 1849 b Bramfield
Christopher 10 months 1850 b Bramfield
Jane Flintoff 72 1779 Mother visiting d 1856?
(I took a guess that Jane might be her mother) Not sure whether the name is Flintoff or Flintoft (probably the latter)

Thanks again for your perseverance, I'm glad I asked. Would you think that a church like St James, Westminster would have more details of the wedding , names of parents, witnesses etc. It's certainly interestin that that 2 country people were married there

Best wishes

Simon
