In trying to establish details on my grand-father, I have come across this number ORAM 32/1, which my aunt refered to as his "army reference" in the first World War. I have no idea in which regiment he served, or whether he actually went to Europe. He was injured at some stage and hospitalised in the London area, as he married my grandmother who was a nurse at the time. Grandmother used to say he was a Captain in the Gurkhas, but we have found no proof of this. I have searched in the TNA / PRO Kew for any records, but with no success.
Any one got any ideas?

If he was commissioned, have you tried the Army List? It is available at TNA and partial runs are held by many County libraries/Record Offices/Local Studies' Libraries.

Other than that, if he served in WW1 away from his home country, then he should be mentioned in the war medals index at documentsonline.

Did he survive the war? If he died as a result of his injuries, then you should check the CWGC website. Do you have any photos of him in uniform which may give some clues?

My Grandfather Sapper Clifford Oram no 158758 was also in the 1st WW and he was a Royal Engineer serving with the 45 Party 3rd Company 2nd Reserve Battalion [based in Chattenden, Rochester, Kent] in Salonika and France. Perhaps 32/1 could be 32nd Party 1st Company of a similar Battalion? Worth a look up using the various combinations.

Can you say in what context this reference was being used and also his full name please.

My Grandfather was Arthur Tanner-Tremaine, or Arthur Guy Tanner-Tremaine, born approximately 1890, died about 1957. He was somehow injured during WWI, and ended up in the hospital where my grandmother was a nurse. They married in 1920, and separated in 1928 and he remarried. A daughter from the second marriage told me that his 'army number' was ORAM 32/1. We have been unable to trace any military records, or his birth certificate, which is what I'm really after. I have found him in the 1901 census as an 11 year old, and have his marriage certificate to my grandmother.

Where was he in 1901, who was he living with, what name was shown on the census, what was his birthplace?

Moving down from a fighting unit could be because of injury.
