Hello

I'm Netty living in Oxfordshire, UK. I have no idea if I am doing the correct thing here but I will just jump in. I found this website some months ago as I started trying to track down a census birthplace entry of Frog Mill. What I read was a reply from someone who had knowledge of the Gloucestershire accent suggesting an alternate spelling for a puzzling census entry. Some months later I have actually returned to the site to make my enquiry and hopefully to eventually break through some other brickwalls as I have time. I have great confidence in all the acquired knowledge there must be if only I can find the time to search the site!

I am hoping I can reach a local Gloucestershire resident who can tell me about this place Frog Mill. I can't find it but I have seen a reference to it as a place where post was dropped off to be delivered, possibly to Cheltenham, although this does not make sense to me. Is Frog Mill a mill, if so where? Is it the name of a village or small hamlet? Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Netty,

I know almost zilch about Glocestershire, I'll admit.

But have you seen this.....

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=66470

It seems to refer to Frogmill as a place. There are many internet references to a Frogmill Inn that still exists as a fairly major looking venue.

You've probably seen this, but I thought I'd check.

Further to my last post....

1901 census includes people claiming birth as Glos, Frogmill, Shipton Olive

e,g.

Bangrove, Beckford, Glos
William Williams, Head, Unm, 32, Carter on Farm, b Glos, Frogmill, Shipton Olive

Class: RG13; Piece: 2457; Folio: 78; Page: 18

It seems almost certain to me that Shipton Olive is meant to be Shipton Oliffe, as in the link I have just sent you.

I suggest that is probably where Frogmill, Glos is meant to be.

Hi,

if you go to the URL below, and enter the postcode, you can zoom in on what was and still is a very nice Inn. The are a number of cottages next to it, which may be what you are looking for. I've eaten there a few times.
You can select an aerial view and see the houses.

Thanks for the info. So many references to Frogmill and although I can't locate it on a map as yet I now have a good idea of the location. Netty
