Hello - I am a newbie from British Columbia and am trying to find my JILES ancestors (so frustrating because GILES is the more prominent spelling). Does anyone know where or how this family name originated?

This is the info I have from my Grandfather's birth certificate:

CHARLES FREDERICK JILES b. l June 1861
FATHER: *JOHN JILES
OCCUPATION: BRONZE FIGURE MOLDER
MOTHER: **ISABELLA ASHMEAD
RESIDENCE: 2 CAMBRIDGE TERRACE, PIMBLICO

*JOHN JILES (and household) is listed in one census as:
JOHN JELES 65 Pimblico Rd.,
Census Place: London, Middlesex, England
Family History Library Film 1341023
Public Records Office Reference: RG11
Piece/Folio 0101 / 27
Page Number 7

From this info I wonder how far back my family can be tracked? And if **Isabella's Ashmead's family can also be tracked. (I will leave BRADLEY for another time)!

Many thanks

Dee

Thank you, Pam

The JILES family sure is a scarce and shy one - I hope there is someone out there who can answer my questions.

Best regards

Dee

Hi Dee
I live in Alberta and have some Bradley ancestors mostly from Welby - I'm not sure where Wirral is. I will look further to see if you have posted Bradley info somewhere else in this forum.

Hello Lindad,

The Wirral is the lumpy bit of England that sticks out between Wales and Liverpool. Between the Rivers Mersey and Dee.

(Apologies to anyone from the Wirral... :o)

Lumpy? I know I've put a bit of weight on, but I've never been called that before! :D

Dee,

If you obtain their marriage certificate - the marriage of an Isabella ASHMEAD was registered in the December qtr 1852 at Leicester registration district, vol 7a, page 736 and there is a corresponding entry for a John JILES - this will give you the names and professions of both bride and groom which should make it easier to trace them in the 1841 census and backwards from 1837 in the parish registers. Certificates can be purchase online at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/.

HTH and good luck

Oh! Oh! I am so excited about these replies and cannot thank you enough. This is such great news! Finally something about my ancestors. I will send for John and Isabella's marriage certificate and go from there.

As for Bradley, I'm looking for information about my great-grandfather, WILLIAM HENRY BRADLEY. My gandmother's information is:

ELIZA MAY BRADLEY
Christened 31 March 1880
Wallasey, Cheshire
Father: William Henry
Mother: Elizabeth Carey
Batch No. C009503
Dates 1841 - 1901
Source Call No. 1737060
Type: Film
Print Out Call No.: None

I have no idea what 'Batch No.s", etc. are nor do I do how to access them. Can you help, please?

I believe my grandmother was christened at St. Hilary's Church, Wirral. Her mother died when she was very young and she lived with her god-parents. She said she came from Liverpool and I imagine that is where she lived after Wirral. She had two sisters: Lilian and Selina (sp?). We have photos of her taken by Priestley & Son, 17 Falkland Rd., Egremont; Bennet James, Quex Rd. High Rd. Kilburn N.W.; Vandyke The Photographer, 62 Bold St. Liverpool; and Charles Koenig, 373 Edgware Rd. Maida Vales, Paddington, London.

Again many thanks to you all

Dee
