I have a grandfather that served with the Royal Navy during WW1, rumour has it he was with the RNAS working with airships/balloons, and then joined the Royal Flying Corps.
Can anybody offer any advice on where to look for his service records.
Thanks for any help.

Put his details in here (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/browse-refine.asp?CatID=15&searchType=browserefine&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1)
If you find an entry which fits, pay £3.50 and you can download it.
Don't try entering too much detail on your chap, if the surname is not too common - just enter that. If you get too many hits, refine the search by entering a forename.
If you get stuck, ask but in that case, let us know what you know of him - Name, age, place of birth, and if you know his rank in the RN?

Hi Geoffers,
Thanks for the advice, I tried your suggestion but drew a blank, there were other Fanstone's on the list but not him,Just wondering is his records passed to the RAF if he did join the Royal Flying Corps? so his details are as follows..
Robert Medley Fanstone, Born 1894 Romsey, Hampshire,
Thanks

If he joined the RN as an officer - see this research guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=287)
Another research guide covers what is available for the RAF, RFC and RNAS (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=60)
The second might be most helpful to you.

Hi Geoffers,
It looks like its a trip down to the National Archives for me,by the sounds of it most of the data is on microfilm.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Regards
Mike

Hello Mike,
My fatyher also served in the Royal Navy (RNAS) in ww1. when the RNAS and RFC were disbanded and combined to form the RAF on 1st. April 1918 dad was transfered to the RAF. I obtained his record from the National Archives on a document number ADM/188/622.
You could try that source.
