|help| I am a newbie and trying to put together the family history for my elderly mother. I have a marriage certificate for her paternal grandfather a Thomas Musson born Billingborough, Lincolnshire, father Charles Musson, mother Mary Jane Davies. Oral family history has him moving to Doncaster Yorkshire with his family but the info on the internet point to his mother as Sarah Jane Bugg. What do I believe and where should I go from here? |banghead|

I have had success though with her maternal great grandmother's family - Hughes, surgeons from Staffordshire.

I didn't realise how addictive genealogy could be -I think I will take a break for a while then another avenue opens up and I can't help but take another look!!

Hi, and welcome to the forum (madhouse) because we are all a bit dotty round here.

If you give us some dates for these events you know from the certs, we could start doing a few lookups and perhaps get you down the right track.

The info I have is:

Family bible
Thomas Musson born Bilingsborough, Lincolnshire 1860 to Charles Musson and Jane. Thomas married Martha Elizabeth Sully in Australia.

Marriage Certificate - 7th May 1890, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Thomas Musson, age 28, Mariner born Doncaster York, England to Charles Musson and Mary Jane Davies. Fathers occupation: Labourer
Martha Elizabeth Sully, age 22, Domestic Duties born London, Middlesex England to William James Sully and Hannah Matthews. Fathers occupation: painter.

Census etc
Thomas Musson christened 18/3/1866 St James, Doncaster, Yorkshire
1851 Charles, Jane, John and Thomas Musson Billingborough, Linc
1861 Charles, Jane, John and Thomas Musson and Thomas Bugg Doncaster Yorkshire

I have records of Martha Elizabeth arriving in Australa but can't find anything for Thomas.

Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

I think you have most of the pertinent information already, but to fill in a few gaps:

1857 Charles Musson marries Jane Bugg, which fits with Sarah Jane Bugg and the lodger in ...

1861 census - (as you relate) Charles, Jane, John and Thomas Musson (age 1) and Thomas Bugg, Doncaster Yorkshire. Thomas Bugg, the lodger, is presumably Jane's brother although I haven't checked.

1871 census - family still living in Doncaster (42 Bridge Street):
Charles Musson, head, Mar, 35, Lincolnshire Quadring (Quadren)
Jane Musson, wife, Mar, 34, Lincolnshire Newton
John, son, 13, Lincolnshire Billingborough
Thomas, son, 11, Lincolnshire Billingborough
George W, son, 9, Yorkshire Doncaster
Mary G, daur, 6, Yorkshire Doncaster
Charles, son, 3, Yorkshire Doncaster
Robert, son, 11 months, Yorkshire Doncaster
George, father-in-law, Widow, 71, Lincolnshire Lenton

1881 census - family still living in Doncaster (42 Bridge Street) continuing to breed like rabbits::
Charles Musson, head, Mar, 45, Lincolnshire Quadring (Quadren)
Jane Musson, wife, Mar, 43, Lincolnshire Newton
John, son, 23, Lincolnshire Billingborough
George W, son, 19, Yorkshire Doncaster
Charles, son, 13, Yorkshire Doncaster
Robert, son, 10, Yorkshire Doncaster
James, son, 8, Yorkshire Doncaster
Annie Elizabeth, daur, 5, Yorkshire Doncaster
Sarah Jane, daur, 2, Yorkshire Doncaster

....but Thomas Musson appears to be on board HMS Duncan, Skegness, Kent. I assume that at some point in the next few years he moves to Oz.

Hope that helps. Shout if you want more.
