I think the only way you could find this information without purchasing the certificate is if you or a friend could visit the record office/library where the particular registers are kept, or a microfilmed copy of them, and view the marriage in that way. If you don't have the actual church, you may have to search through all parish registers for Westbury on Severn.

Sorry I can't be more helpful than that. I think you may have to weigh the cost of your travel to view the registers against the cost of the certificate. But others here may have a better idea.

Good luck.

Charles Harts father I think was Richard
Hi there,

You don't say why you think Richard may be Charles's father.

Is it based on finding what you think is the right Charles as part of a family group in 1851, possibly ?

If not, and you haven't tried it, this sometimes works, depending on how unusual the name, and whether there is a distinct place of birth where not too many people of that name and age will have been born.

So if you can find Charles married at (say) age 25, and born in "Little Piddington" in 1861, then if you can find him unmarried Age 15 with the same birth place in 1851, and with a family, you can make an inspired guess about his parents.

With my luck, he would probably turn up somewhere as a Farm Servant, not with his parents though. |computer|

The technique doesn't really work if you have to look back to 1841, as actual places of birth are not recorded, and ages are often only within a 5 year range.

I wonder if there is another way round it. I just looked up in the 1851 census and found a Charles Hart, aged 14, in Westbury on Severn, living with parents Richard and Sarah Hart, which would have put him about 21 when he got married. If it is the same person. The 1891 census, with his wife Sophie puts his birth about 1838.

I don't know if this helps at all.
