I would appreciate your opinion on the following.

Hannah Hudson born 1809, Kirton .. IGI but confirmed on all Suffolk census lists
Hannah Hudson married Samuel Oxborrow Kirton... IGI but confirmed on all census lists
I have not yet confirmed on Kirton register as need to travel a long distance to check it in Melbourne.
1851 George Oxborrow living with Daniel Hudson ,my great, great grandfather (all his details confirmed as the brother to Hannah), Kirton listed as nephew, aged 18 born Dallinghoo, Suffolk.
1833 George son of Samuel and Hannah( Hodgson) read from original Dallinghoo parish register.

Hodgson......Hudson?? I am interested to know if this type of error occurs frequently in the original registers.

Do you think I would be safe in assuming this to be the same Hannah with the above information?
Could this be a case of a hearing impairment or possibly the written interpretation of the verbal Suffolk accent?
thanks

Can't say about Suffolk, or how likely the change in spelling is in this particular case. However, there is Hudson marriage in one branch of my Manx family where the name is sometimes Hodgson in wills etc. - but later settled down to Hudson.

It would also depend to an extent on how well Samuel could read; he might not be able to check the spelling. This is a perennial problem in earlier registers when schooling was less common. Check the marriage register when you can to see if he made his mark or signed.

It could also be a transcription error, of course.

Thank you, Kate and Colin.
I really appreciate you helpful suggestons. It was also helpful Kate, to know that you have the same situation in your tree with the name Hudson.

I had not thought of the illiteracy possibility. Samuel was a reasonably successful farmer during his life but of course could still have had little schooling.

Until I check Kirton marriage register I think I will assume all is correct with a small question mark included!

:)Thanks again for your interest.
