Sgt Thomas Litchfield was the first husband of Mary, who bore him a child at South Barracks Walmer Kent in December 1858.

On the 5th May 1866 Mary gave birth to a son at The Armory Barracks Cirencester Gloucestershire, the father S/Sgt Robert Owen, regiment unknown.

I tried to obtain Sgt Litchfield's service record hoping to resolve two questions, what happened to Sgt TL also where did he marry Mary ?

I searched the lists at the TNA and obviously made an error, I quoted WO25/82, I received a reply stating ' unable to locate within specified document '

Would some one please help|help||help|

Thank you,
Joe.

TNA's catalogue seems to be down at the moment - at least, I can't get it to work now, I'll try again later.

In the absence of that, I'm having to refer to a card index created from notes when I've looked for records, it won't tell you specifically the class and piece, but should at least point you towards the right area.

It seems as though this chap may have died in the army, you may therefore not find discharge papers for him. My notes suggest trying the (monthly and quarterly) casualty returns 1809-1875-ish. The main series is in:

WO25/1359-2410 and WO25/3251-3260
There is an index to these returns in
WO25/2411-2755 and WO25/3261-3471.

Casualty returns include deaths, desertions and discharges.

There are record books of effects (what happened to personal possessions) for 1862-1881 in WO25/3476-3490, with an index in WO25/3491-3501.

When the catalogue is working again, I'll see if there is anything more obvious to help.

The catalogue is back working again

Searching on 'casualty AND 51'
year range 1860-1870
department or series code - WO25

Gives this hit (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/searchresults.asp?SearchInit=0&txtsearchterm=casualty+AND+51&txtfirstdate=1860&txtlastdate=1870&txtrestriction=WO25&hdnsorttype=Reference&image1.x=17&image1.y=5)

which just about covers the whole period that you are after

WO25/3256 Casualty Return, records Thomas Litchfield - now a Private - died on the 15th September 1860, unfortunately I am unable to decipher where but, I am hoping Major Deedes at the Light Infantry office will provide the answer.

The record indicates his wife, Mary , was present with the Regiment at the time of his death,

Privates, 399,William Stephen ? born Lancester, collier.
" 185,Amos ? Parsons " Risbury Herefordshire ? labourer
" 234,John Trumble " Ballina Mayo labourer
" 732, John Wilkinson " Nottingham lacemaker.
Were also recorded.
