Hi I am trying to trace my grandfather on my mum's side. I am running into a lot of difficulty and was wondering if anyone could give me advice.
See he left my nan for another woman so no one spoke of him so all I have is his first and surname. I don't really have a date of birth but could guess and I know he was in the army.
I have searched a bit for my nan and found her death information as she died in England but was born in Scotland but having trouble finding any marriage information.
Does anyone have and suggestions on what or where I can search for information on him?
Many thanks Jeannette

Hi Jeannette and welcome to Brit-Gen.

If you could lay your hands on a copy of your grandparents' marriage certificate, with any luck it will give his age. Then you will have an idea of when to look for his birth certificate. It should also give his father's name and, depending on when this is, he or his father could show up in the censuses.
and I know he was in the army.
Any clues as to when or which regiment?
I have searched a bit for my nan and found her death information as she died in England but was born in Scotland but having trouble finding any marriage information.
Have you any ideas of when the oldest of her children was born? Not always helpful (my dad was born 10 years after his parents married and is their only child) but it could be a start.
Where did they live?

I am trying to find marriage information at the moment.
Not sure on the regiment. A family member is trying to get hold of my great uncle to see if he has any more information as he used to visit them.
Oldest child was born in 1947. As for where they lived other than being stationed in Germany I am pretty sure they lived in London as I have yet to find any information on Scotland other than my gran living there when she was single. I also know my mum and uncle were born in London.

If the chap was in the army when the first child was born, his birth certificate could well show a name, rank, number and regiment - which would be a start.
It depends on where the birth took place as to where to look for the certificate. Do you know where to begin looking?
Was the man British, or Canadian?
