Newbie says hi the the Boer War thread. Currently researching the service records of my Great Uncle who served with the Connaught Rangers in the Great Boer War. All I know is that he was Private, Service No. 6218 and served in South Africa from Oct 1899 to April 1902. His name was John McManus. If anyone can help or provide me with a direction to try and pursue more info on this soldier I would be most grateful.
Cheers

Hello and welcome to the British-Genealogy forums.
If you have a browse of this forum for the South African (Boer) War, you'll find lots of ideas, also
Army Service records are held at The National Archives, see their research guides (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1#b) prefixed 'British Army'.
Searching TNA's catalogue, shows that his service record should be in this piece (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=694373&CATLN=6&Highlight=%2CMCMANUS&accessmethod=0) - You should be able to request TNA to get your chap's service record from this piece using their online facility.
Kevin Asplin's (http://hometown.aol.co.uk/kevinasplin/home.html)site has a lot of information connected with the war
