I am having trouble getting any further back, I have another George c 1788married to Hannah Richardson c 1782 in mind but cannot find the proof I need to claim them as relatives. It was so easy compaired to this when I was able to use cuncus records. Please can anybody help?|banghead|

You will need access to parish registers to look for a baptism of George - this will involve going to a record office which holds them.
Also, are there surviving tithe commutation returns and associated maps? Are there any entries in the Land tax returns from the end of the 18th century, which show the spread of the surname around this area?

How do you go about finding Tythe commutations and maps please?
The visit to the Durham Registery office is not an option at the moment due to family circumstances, but thanks for your time.

They will be held at the County Record Office, so unfortunately will have to wait for circumstances to change.

Thankyou re tythe details. Its inevitable that I will have to try going to Durham Registery office at some point. My BROWNS also come from Durham (sunderland) so I guess I could do the lot on one appointment. The Pilot details though I am thinking that I need Tyne and Wear details? Do you think that they might be at Durham registery as well or not please?

If this relates to your earlier thread about Merchant Seamen and one of your chaps being a Pilot - then you will need Tyne and Wear. Have a browse of TNA's reseach guide on Sources for Maritime History (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/rdleaflet.asp?sLeafletID=367)
