I'm up against a brick wall trying to find George Rose 1820-1885 who jumped ship in Grand Bank Newfoundland. I've been told Britain had ships that patrolled the Newfoundland coastline during that era. There was 2 attempts to bring back but were unsuccessful. One of the attempts was supposedly by his brother who was an officer in the Navy. George Rose remained in Grand Bank for his whole life. There was mention by family descendants that he came from a family of great importance and that was the reason they were trying to bring back to the UK. My thoughts are he must have had serious problems to justify jumping ship. My question is if available, where can I obtain the name of the ships that patrolled that area during that time. Secondly, if I find the listing of ships will it have all the crew members listed? I'm located in Canada.
Thank you.

Do you know if George ROSE was in the Royal Navy, or Merchant NAVY?
Do you know if he was Commissioned, Warrant, or other rank?
Do you have any details of his brother - name and rank, was he in the Royal Navy?
If RN - Going down the route of finding:
a) All RN ships that patrolled off Canada over a 6 year period (probably by checking the Navy List)
b) Locating and searching all pay books (these are easier to search than musters as they index entries by first letter of surname) for a George ROSE.
c) Locating an entry for a George ROSE which has reason for discharge as 'R' (Run i.e. deserted)
Is any awfully B-I-G task for someone with unlimited access to TNA, for someone in Canada........!
N.A.M Rodger's 'bible' - 'Naval Records for Genealogists' notes on pages 54-55 "Descriptions of deserters, taken from these (dsecription) books and sometimes written on pages torn fro them, were sent to the Admiralty, and are sometimes found annexed to a Run List, or enclosed with a letter in AMD1."
If using ships musters, at the end of each muster table there is a list of all those run (deserted)

I'm prepared to leave no stone unturned and work as hard as I possibly can to find George Rose 1820-1885 who jumped ship. We don't know for sure but the consensus of the family is he was in the navy because they thought his brother was with the navy when they came to look for him.
What I would like to do is:
*Look for British Naval the ships that sailed the Newfoundland coast in 1851.
*Look for a George Rose who would be about 31 years old.
If that failed I would do the same thing for 1850.
If he isn't in the British Navy I will look for Merchant Navy ships and crews for 1851 and 1850.
What I would like to know is where can I find a list of British Navy ships that sailed the Newfoundland Coast in 1850-1? Is there a C-D I can buy?
Where would I find the crew lists, once I have the ship name? Is there a C-D available?
If you wonder why I'm so persistent I've had great luck finding my family by looking at the enumerator's sheet rather than rely on transcribers or computer data.
Any suggestions for a starting point are most appreciated, I'll do the digging even though I'm in Canada.

You might be able to locate a reference to his brother in the London Gazette (http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/home.aspx?geotype=London) where details of promotions were posted.

One of the 1851 Navy Lists is available on CD - see here (http://www.parishchest.com/shop/index.php?cmd=listlinkeditems&cat=D6131&supplier=&breadcrumb=Army%2C+Navy+%26+Airforce%3AYour+Old+Bo oks+%26+Maps:Navy+Lists+1801+-+1900)
There were quarterly lists publised. The Navy List records which station a ship was posted to, but individual ships which may have sailed to a particular port, for some reason or another.
You may find more complete runs of the Nav List in a reference library.
Other companies may sell different Navy Lists on CD
Where would I find the crew lists, once I have the ship name? Is there a C-D available?
No, you'll need a researcher at TNA. Have a browse of this research guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=39)
This is assuming he was in the RN as opposed to the Merchant Navy and you don't appear to be certain about that.
Your best bet may be to emply someone to look a ADM1, which I previously mentioned.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
I'm going to try some things on my own, if it doesn't work, I will consider your other alternative.
Thanks again.

Good luck with your searches.
Another thing to try - though this will also be difficult from a distance - is if he was circulated with otehr deserters in The Police Gazatte. This would only apply if he was in the RN and not the Merchant Navy.
The only other thing I can think that you might try are local newspapers on the offchance that he was circulated as having run.

I'm going to order some Navy lists on Monday from Parish Chest for 1851 January, 1851 Apr and 1851 September. I want to see how many ships I'm looking at that could possibly have patrolled the East and South Newfoundland coast. If it's less than a dozen ships and I have their names I'll next look for the crew members. I'm retired so I have the time to pursue this. In the meantime I will keep your line of thought in front of me so as I'm always aware of my options.
Thank you.

If nothing else, you may be able to identify your chap's brother who was the officer.
I think you may find that the ships which may have patrolled this area will be shown as on the North America Station.

Could he have been related to this chap?

Sorry the above isn't the one. Our George was a deserter. I ordered the Navy lists for January, April and September 1851 today. Once I have a chance to review the microfiche I'll have an idea of the names of the ships that patrolled the Newfoundland coast and I'll look for the crews. I'm doing one step at a time and I won't leave any stones unturned.
