I've just been reading a book "Lost Voices of The Edwardians" by Max Arthur, which includes a chapter on Politics and Suffragettes.
Something I didn't realise - but, I suppose, not entirely surprising - is that, according to one of the people interviewed, thousands of women avoided being counted in the 1901 census.
So, if you can't find a female member of your family that may well be the reason.
