That thread does not seem to include a link to the official information on the 1911 census -

Hi Peter,
thank you. I just thought I would ask about it as we already have ours here in Canada.
Thanks again,
Ann

Not that it will do any good but has anyone thought that if enough of us on this site petitioned it might speed things up. I cannot see why they think 1911 holds sensitive information. The Irish have had their 1911 census released, maybe they are less sensitive than we are.
Cheers.

If you read all this thread,
http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18550&highlight=1911+census
especially the messages by Guy Etchells you can see exactly why things are as they are. Expecting a government to move quickly and change things just because more people are researching their ancestry is a waste of energy.

I suppose it's because we have become a nation that expects instant gratification - and this is not good.

~sigh~ but sometimes instant gratification is too slow ~sigh~

There was a petition some time ago, and the date of release of part of the information has been brought forward.

As more and more people live to be 100 (including my own grandmother) I can understand why the government might be wary of releasing some of the more sensitive information.

As more and more people live to be 100 (including my own grandmother) I can understand why the government might be wary of releasing some of the more sensitive information.

Although I understand the reasoning behind this and apply the same rules to my own websites (no details for people born under 100 years ago etc), there are a couple of things which seem to make it a little pointless.
As we all know, it is very easy to track someone down as regards their parents, birth dates, addresses, telephone numbers etc with data which is easily accessible - GRO certificates, electoral rolls, phone directories etc.
Should I wish to discover my wifes details for example (yes, I know that I already know them, but just for the purposes of illustration..), as long as I know her first name(s) and her married name, I could scout through the records held on A.co.uk or whatever and discover her marriage (yep, it is there, I have looked in the past). From there, I now know her maiden name and can track her back. Once I have her birth details, I know her mothers maiden name etc and, if I order the certificate, I can begin to build up a record of her life quite easily. The births of our children are easy to find using the GRO and the discovery of my wifes maiden name (although with less common names you have a good chance of finding the right person anyway). In fact, it is arguably easier to trace people born in recentish years than it is to trace our ancestors from the 18th century.
Just a thought...

I am still sticking to the unwritten rules on my own sites.
