Hi everyone,

How can I trace a report/record of Bigamy? It occurred in Chester, mid 1940's....have tried the newspapers(no joy)...am I able to request a copy of the trial from the County court/assizes?

You could try three searches of The National Archives (TNA) online catalogue (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp)

Enter this detail in the various fields:

'Word or phrase' - enter the surname AND bigamy
(note the AND in capitals)
'Year range' - from the information you give limit it to 1935-1955
'Department or series code' - you might be able to get away with leaving this blank - but otherwise, you will need to carry out three searches, in the first search enter 'CRIM', then try 'ASSI' and finally 'MEPO' - I can't offhand think of other classes in which a record may be recorded.

The case papers remain closed for 75 years, but you can request a review under the Freedom of Information Act, which may allow you access to some of the information.

If the above is as clear as mud, let me know and I'll try to clarify things, but it would be easier to expalin with a name to use as an example.

Hi Geoffers,

Thanks for your reply, will give your advice a shot.

The names are Searson-Threlfall.

I'm almost sure there was a report about the arrest and subsequent trial,as I recall my adoptive parents talking about 'her mother' and the things she got involved in.....the HER being me...

I believe you may have the facts wrong.

I know of the case you refer to but the name was not searson threlfall or even threlfall searson and certainly not in chester.

Okay,so what do you know

I am the a/daughter of one of the persons involved...was asking the question regarding the case based on what names I was given, and, what I have been led(or misled)to understand as to where it took place.
