Were there any clues as to which part of Cornwall?

It may just be a tiny hamlet/farmstead that won't show on a map.

I'm originally from Cornwall so I'll have a think.

A quick look at the IGI shows
1790 St Erth
1794 Breage
1795 Budock
1795 Crowan

There's a Kirton Wood in St Erth Parish

thanks both.

I will try and contact Anthony, a Bartle relation and see if he can give us any information about Thomas's parents.

hello Tony was on line..

I have been well told off, only teasing I hope!

aparantly the Thomas was not born in 1792 He was born in 1790 and his parent's were Peter Bartle and Mary Bartle nee Tonkin

so the St Erth one would appear to be correct...still none the wiser as to where we are mind

Sue

PS they bred like rabbits which given part of last name is Burrows made me laugh, from what Tony has said the family had between 8 and 17 children each.....

I've just checked the map and the modern spelling is Kerthen Wood.

If you go to

www.streetmap.co.uk

enter 158565,33195 and select OS grid you'll be able to spot it.

or even easier
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=158565&y=33195&z=3&sv=158565,33195&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf

I did a quick Google & found this.

http://www.kerthen-wood.datamap.org.uk/

You have to zoom in & you also have the choice of a satellite view - not that there's much there these days, fields & trees.

EDIT: Oops I should have zoomed in closer - there's what looks like a farm and some cottages.
