Why are they so difficult!?? I am now using hubbys phone. Okay, on fmp.com i have searched deaths and marriages for all 4 children, even by quarters....to no avail. Why am i not having success? I know my gfather walked out on them, could their mum used her un-married name?

It depends on when and where and how you have managed to restrict the period of search.

Could you give us a few details - who are you looking for?

There's are births

Isabella E MARKS, Jun 1923, mother's maiden name SALISBURY, registered Southwark, Vol 1d Page 128

or

Isabel M MARKE, Dec 1923, mother's maiden name FLAHERTY, registered Islington, Vol 1b Page 289

As a starter, are either of those two close?

Continued.........

Another birth

Jun 1922 - MARKE, Kathleen P, mother's maiden name FLAHERTY, registered Pancras, Vol 1b Page 118

So with the correlation in names, am I correct in assuming the entries for the mother being a Flaherty are correct? Not sure where the problem is in finding them on fmp, they turned up very quickly.

Okay, having just re-read our original post about looking for marriages and deaths; it's a case of sarching - possibly over a long period of time for both and beyond the extent of my largesse. Yes, if dad walked out on them, they could have reverted to the mum's maiden name - but at least one did not.

Also consider emigration, try searching CWGC for deaths in WW2 - did the mother leave a will in which she mentions her children? Do they appear in any directories - other than that, I'm afraid it's the l-o-n-g search.

also wills , where would i find them?

The calendar (index) to Wills and Admons (Letters of administration granted when there was no will) has been copied onto microfilm and can be veiwed at most county record offices/local studies libraries. Some other larger reference libraries also have it. The calendar is very easy to use, the detail being sufficient to identify most people.

Bournemouth Local Studies Library (http://www.bournemouth.gov.uk/Residents/Libraries/Info/Bournemouth/BmthLibrary_Local_Studies_and_Family_History.asp) appears to have quite a few resources, try phoning them to see if they have it, and if they do, whether you need to reserve a film reader.
