Elizabeth GOWER aged 15 is on the 1851 with her grandparents Robert COCKRELL and his wife Elizabeth. Piece: 1639; Folio: 601; Page: 19.
I have been unable to trace her on the 1841 (there is a family of GOWERs at Brasted but they are not the right ones. The daughter Eliza marries someone other than my ancestor). On my Elizabeth's marriage cert, her father is JAMES GOWER, a well digger. He is NOT shown as deceased.
I have found a baptism in Tunbridge Wells in 1833 of Elizabeth GOWER, parents JAMES and ELIZABETH. I think this is likely to be her. There are no other baptisms for this couple for a few years either side. Nor are there burials at that church for GOWERS up to 1837.
I would like to find her on the 1841 ideally!
Robert COCKRELL (her grandfather) possibly marries an ELIZABETH COLCHIN in Penshurst 1803 (the record is transcribed as CORKRELL but the handwriting on the original could easily be COCKRELL as well). On the 1851, Robert's wife is b c 1769 so this could be a second or late marriage. She may well have had children prior to this. She was apparently b Chiddingstone but I could not trace an Eliz Colchin in the baptism register when I went to Maidstone a couple of years ago.
So who were Elizabeth GOWER's parents? I have a hunch that their marriage is on the IGI - JAMES GOWER & ELIZABETH CAUTION. Caution is not a particularly prolific surname and I wonder if it is COLCHIN misheard. The witnesses to this marriage were Charles and Mary SKINNER. There is a marriage on the IGI of a Charles SKINNER to a MARY GOWER (James' sister?).
If CAUTION is really COLCHIN, this would tenously link this marriage to the Elizabeth COLCHIN who marries Robert COCKRELL.
I would therefore like to find Elizabeth CAUTION's baptism to see who her parents were.
There are two JAMES GOWERs on the IGI b 1794. I have tried to eliminate these or prove either one is mine. I do not think the one from FRANT is the right one (he appears to marry an Elizabeth and they have a daughter Eliza but she marries someone other than my ancestor - per note above). The other one is from Tunbridge, and may well be the right one, but I have been unable to confirm this.
There are 3 other children b Frant which may be James and Elizabeth's. All boys but only one seems to live to adulthood and he never marries. He does appear to have been the informant on one of the Cockrell's death certs.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
