My great gand father was James Ivey Hill born in Wadebridge, Cornwall about 1857 and his wife was Ellen born in Probus, Cornwall about 1854 info from the 1881 Census.

On the census they had a son James Ivey Hill born Q1 1879. My grand father came along 9 years later in 4 2 1888 and his mother was Ellen Williams thats on his birth certificate. I have tried searching from 1873 to 1879 but cannot find a marriage date. I also tried on the genuki cornwall site but with no luck, thats if I did it right first time I have used it pretty daunting when you cant find your way round a site.

To make matters even worse I found on the 1891 Census that they had a son called George aged 15 born in Wadebridge (1876) couldn't find him on births either tried under Williams and found a George Williams registered in St Columb Q2 1875 5c 62, might have been born out of wedlock. They moved to Plymouth, Devon before 1879 because James was listed as being born in Devon, Plymouth as where the rest of the other 5 children on the 1891 census. They had another son Q4 1891 which shows up on the 1901 census.

Any |help| with this dilemma would be much appreciated :):)

Regarding George there are these two GRO entries that might be of interest:

George Hill / 1877 / Q1 / Holsworthy / 5b / p.556

William George Hill / 1876 / Q3 / Liskeard / 5c / p.58

I know it's not Wadebridge, but you never know ...

|wave|Hi Maureen
You are right with what you state. I have found a lot more concerning his father than I have of the son. Looking at the census stuff for James Ivey Hill he is listed as James T Hill 1901, James J Hill 1881 and as you say he aged 20years on the night of the census (must have been a really stressful time filling in the census form for him :D). Wish those transcribers could read English, I know some of the writing is hard to read but being more conversent with the british names and towns would have helped, also with the styles of handwriting we were taught at school. Makes it extremely frustrating...

James I Hill's mother was Harriet Goodman have managed to trace her family back to 1771 but have to prove it to myself. His father as you say was John Samuel Hill born 1832 at St Breock (Wadebridge) and died in 1899 in the Bodmin area of Cornwall. His Grandfather was John Hill born 1796 at St Breock (Wadebridge) and he was a Tailor, all this information has been gleaned from census material.

The burning Question is where were they married. Even found a ref to Ellen Williams on the 1871 census where she was a servant working in the Cambourne District for a family named Peters and on the 1861 census aged 7 but living at St Cleer, Cornwall but birth place showing as Truro.

I also think I found his birth registration Q2 1856 at St. Columb 5c 129 ;)

Guess I'll have to keep plugging along, hope to hear some more good news later and all this time I thought I was a true Devonian born in Plymouth 1946 not knowing my roots came from Cornwall.
