Hi there, I need some help please with my gt.grandad Isaac William Brimble. He was born in 1864, in Mangotsfield GLS, to William Brimble and Amelia, MS Parry. He married Louisa Cox and had 4 daughters in the early 1890s-Louisa, Harriet(my grandma), Lillian and Nell. Then one day soon after the birth of Nell he walked out of the house and never returned, leaving his wife with 4 small daughters to bring up.They lived in Bristol then.
There was some speculation in the family that he could have run away to sea as he couldn't face the responsibility!
Is there any way I can find out where he may have gone? I have checked the Black Sheep index and cannot find him there.|banghead|
I know its a long shot but there could be sites I don't know about that I could search. Thanks in advance Sheilah

Don't forget he may also have changed his name so that the family could not track him down. A friend of mine's grandfather did exactly the same walked out on his wife and family. They only found out many years later and that was by accident that he had changed his last name.
sorry if this has clouded the issue further

What did Isaac do for a living and how old was he?
Have you tried the passenger lists on findmypast?
does he show up as Isaac, or William in the 1901 census?

I tried the 1901 Census no Isaac Brimbles and only one William born in the 1860's but this cannot be him as the children are too old and the mother in law is living with them and her last name is not Cox.

That's another tricky one. A couple of suggestions:
Have you got the marriage certificates for the daughters, assuming that they all got married? That might give some clues to a) whether Isaac was still alive in the early 1900s, and b) his profession.
Could always check Trade directories. In 1891 he is a bricklayer and from what I can see his father and other Brimble relatives are stone masons too. Even if he fled for a while perhaps he returned and contined in his trade?
Other than that, I think it's wait until 1911!
You probably know this already, but here are census details for 1891 and 1901 (without Isaac obviously):
1891
Isaac W Brimble abt 1863 Staple Hill, Gloucestershire, England Head
Louisa Brimble abt 1863 Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Wife
Louisa Brimble abt 1888 Bedminster, Somerset, England Daughter
Harriett E Brimble abt 1890 Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Daughter
1901
Louise Brimble abt 1864 Bristol, St Philip Head
Louise Brimble Louise abt 1888 Bristol; Bedminster Daughter
Harriet E Brimble Louise abt 1890 Bristol, St Paul Daughter
Nellie Brimble Louise abt 1894 Bristol, St Paul Daughter

Thank you all for your replies.
Isaac was a stone mason or quarryman, as his father before him.
I haven't checked the passenger lists yet. I was thinking more down the lines of him running away to sea. My mother used to speak of him with some disregard. I think he had mentioned this at some time and the thought was that he couldn't cope with the responsibility of supporting a young family. I was wondering where to look for seamans lists also. Being Bristol, I suppose it must have been quite easy to get work on a ship.
I have checked the Black Sheep site and not found anything there. Also some newspapers about that time-c1896, in case he was murdered or anything.

Have a browse through TNA's research guides on Merchant Seamen (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1#m)

Hi Momo, Thanks for that. The 1895 one looks possible. I'll have to buy some credits on Find my past.
Wonder if he did run off with someone?? All that talk about going to sea could have been only half true!!!
Thanks Sheilah
