Second mystery. Again almost there but with a few question marks.
Mary Palmer. Born 10th June, 1880.
Died 4th January,1966. Alveston, Stratford on Avon. Married name, Mary Shipton
No details of spouse is recorded in the bible. BUT there is a black edged death card for a Thomas Shipton. He died 24th March, 1895, aged 78 years.Buried in Lugwardine.
I have found a Thomas Shipton, b 1817, Thornbury. Gloucestershire.
The 1891 census shows he has a grandson, William Shipton, aged 14 born in Yorkshire. William would be about the right age to marry our Mary.
There is a Mary Shipton in the 1901 census who is married to a John Shipton.
Her age is given as 23 and being born in Bromyard. Herefordshire. The age is wrong and the birthplace is wrong but I wonder. I'm sure Mary would have been married in Bosbury.
Cheers
Dave

I have found what may be the death of Thomas but the age is different.
Surname Given Name District Volume Page

Deaths Mar 1895

Shipton Thomas Hereford 6a 409
I may have to go to Hereford next week to see my Mum, if I do I will go via Lugwardine and see if I can find the grave. I have a camera on my phone so will take a picture.
Hi Dave,
The 1881 census holds the answer.
Thomas Shipton is with his Grandfather Thomas in that census too. He is aged 4 and gives his birth place as Middlestone Yorkshire.
1881 census
ref RG11/2610 Folio 67 Page 9
Eardisley Herefordshire
John Shipton 31 Railway Lab born Risca Monmouthshire
Eliza wife 29 born Pembridge Herefordshire
John son 6 born Middleston Yorks
Alice dau 3 born Oldham Lancs
Rosa dau 6mths born Eardisley Herefs
John Shipton age 26 in 1901 gives his birthplace as Middleton Yorks.
Conclusion. John Shipton who married Mary Palmer is also the grandson of Thomas who died in 1895. William's brother.

Dave,
I have a problem with this. The Mary Palmer who marries John Shipton gives her birthplace as Collington in 1881 & Bromyard in 1891 & 1901.
This Mary is in Collington in 1881 aged 2 with her parents William & Mary Palmer and by 1891 she is a 12 year old servant.
There is a William & Mary Ann Palmer in Bosbury 1881,1891 & 1901 but they never seem to have a daughter Mary.
If you have a family Bible with the name Shipton in it I fear you may be tracing a wrong line and need to look at William & Mary Palmer at Collington as the correct line. May I ask why you think your Mary came from Bosbury?

I wonder if it is supposed to be Coddington and not Collington.
There is a Coddington near Bosbury which is also not that far from Ledbury

Mary Palmer is listed in the family bible along with all the other children.
Wtitten by the same hand. The list is as follows.
Father. William. 6th Aug. 1840. The bible says Nov 19th
Mother. Mary Ann. Born 1848. No exact date found yet or maiden name.
Children. William. Sarah. Mary. Alice. Harry. Emma. Arthur. Charlie. Ida.
There is a Clive Palmer listed. Born 12th Jan 1877.
He shows up later in the deaths listed in the bible as Clive Jones nee Palmer. Born 12th Jan 1877 Died Oct 24th 1959. I'm not sure why the name change there.
As you can see there are other little problems to sort out still.
Cheers. Dave

I'm only guessing they are all born in Bosbury.
William is described as a farmer with 20 acres.
I have a vey old photo taken by what may have been a traveling photographer. On the back it says, "Mrs Palmer" Mrs Palmer was not throwing her money about because next to it is written "Cheap molded frame".
The photo is of a large three story house with what must be Mrs Palmer standing at the gate. I do hope its their farm house and that it's still standing because as soon as the weather brightens I am also going to visit Bosbury.
I wonder if there are any Palmers still living there. Now that would be a knockout.
Cheers Dave.
Hi Dave,
I have sorted it!
Mary Palmer is the daughter of William & Mary Palmer who are in Collington in 1881. (SHE IS NOT THE DAUGHTER OF THE WILLIAM & MARY WHO ARE IN BOSBURY IN 1881 LISTED WITH 20 ACRES)
By 1891 William and Mary have moved from Collington to Bosbury with several of the named children from your bible giving their birthplace as Collington. (William is listed born Tedstone) Their daughter Mary has left and is a 12 year old servant in Eastnor giving her birthplace as Bromyard. She is married to John Shipton in 1901 again giving Bromyard as birthplace.
To have the correct Palmer lineage you must follow the William Palmer born Tedstone 1841 and NOT the William Palmer born Bosbury 1841.
Hope you can follow this ok.

So if I am now right, can you confirm that my Palmers are from Tedstone. 1871 census shows William is 30 and Mary his wife is 21 Father is also called William and he was born in 1808 in Wafer, Hertfordshire. His wife is Sarah.
Is this the family. ( or should I take more pills )

Keep taking the tablets, Dave. :D
There is no Wafer in Hertfordshire, but there is TEDSTONE WAFER in Herefordshire
By the way, I'm finding this to be a fascinating thread... :)

Dave,
The only pill you need to take is a sleeping pill and have a good night's rest! YES this is the correct family and aren't you lucky because William's parents are with him in 1871.
The father is born Tedstone Wafer, HEREFORDSHIRE (This is what it says on the original)
Here is the marriage of William jnr.:-
William Palmer & Mary Chadd Oct/Dec 1870 Bromyard vol 6a page 843.
Please make sure those pills are securely locked away before I tell you the next bit!!
Mary Chadd was born in Bosbury.

don't worry Dave, people are always confussing the two counties.
I was born in Hereford and the number of times people have said.. I'd have loved to live near London ...mind the number of these people who get upset when I say Hereford is actually near Wales....
