Dear BG detectives here I have little mysterys that are almost there but not quite. I will post each question separately.
Issac Woodhouse. Birth 1859. Pembridge. Herefordshire. I have the year but not the date.
Married Elizabeth. Born 1861. Clun. Shropshire.
I have no date for the marriage.
Cannot find Elizabeths maiden name or her date of birth.
With the help of Helen in New Zealand, the search narrowed down to an Elizabeth Francis found in the 1861 census. Birth abt 1858 and born in Clun. Can this be confirmed as our Elizabeth ?
They have a daughter called Rose, born in Kington, Herefordshire,
1893. No date.
In the family bible, in pencil, all it says is "Rose Woodhouse died.
All we can find is a Rose Woodhouse, died in Worcester,1918. No other information found.
Cheers Dave.

There is a marriage between Isaac and Elizabeth Francis in 1885 that looks like the one you want:
July-Aug-Sep / Clun / Vol 6a / p.919

According to the 1901 census children began appearing in 1887, which fits. Here's the complete family:

Isaac Woodhouse abt 1859 Pembridge, Herefordshire, England Head
Elizabeth Woodhouse abt 1861 Clun, Shropshire, England Wife
Louisa Woodhouse abt 1887 Clun, Shropshire, England Daughter
Agnes Woodhouse abt 1888 Clun, Shropshire, England Daughter
Millicent Woodhouse abt 1889 Clun, Shropshire, England Daughter
George Woodhouse abt 1891 Kington, Herefordshire, England Son
Rose Woodhouse abt 1893 Hereford Daughter
May Woodhouse abt 1895 Hereford Daughter

Thank you Chris
I think this confirms that this is the right Elizabeth.
Is there anyway of getting the date of the marriage in 1885.
Cheers
Dave

You need to order a copy of the certificate from the General Register Office (GRO), you can do this online here (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/)

A marriage certificate will record

Date and place, whether by licence, banns or in a register officer
Groom and Bride - name, age, marital state, occupation, address, fathers' name and occupation.

Signature or mark of the groom and bride
Signature or mark of the witnesses.

Do you have birth certificates for any of the children? This would give you the mother's maiden name and so act as check that you have the correct marriage from the GRO index.

The fee is £10 per certificate or £7.00 if you have the GRO number.
Now exactly where do I obtain this number and GRO numbers if I want to order other certificates in the future.
Cheers Dave.

A system of civil registration has existed in England and Wales since 1837. Births, marriages and deaths were reported to a local registrar. He forwarded details to the General Register Office (GRO). The GRO produced an index of events.

The GRO index can be viewed on fiches at many county record offices/local studies libraries; it is also available online at many pay-per-view sites, such as findmypast, The Genealogist, and 1901census.nationalarchives; also other sites such as Ancestry.

A project exists to transcribe the GRO index and make it freely available. It is called freebmd (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl) freebmd is a useful and free resource, but it is not complete and contains transription errors, so do double check the original index.

Certificates can be ordered online from the GRO (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/)

The use of these certificates and the GRO records is absolutely fundamental to researching recent family history (i.e. 1837 onwards)

Excuse my dimness. Would part of, July-Aug-Sep /Clun / Vol 6a /p.919 be the GRO number, as I have just been to the site and what came up was the same as ChrisKelly gave me earlier.

The GRO index consists of a references to entries. The amount of information contained in a reference varies slightly over time. A basic birth or marriage reference before 1912 consists of:

Year
Quarter (The year is split into four quarters, events registered Jan, Feb and Mar are all in the March quarter, events registered in Apr, May or Jun appear in the June quarter)
Surname
Forename(s)
District (The area where an event was registered, districts have changed quite a lot over time to reflect changes in administration and population)
Volume
Page

So, for the marriage entry given to you, the GRO reference is:

1885 Sep WOODHOUSE, Isaac - Clun. Vol 6a, page 919
