I have just located my ggrandfather on a ship manifest from Liverpool to Quebec, Canada. I know that he was in South Africa until 1904. Is there a way for me to find out the name of the ship he travelled to England on? I would like to find out information about him in South Africa as well. Can someone please point me in the right direction.

Thank you for any help at all.

Sadly the best info on someone in South Africa seems to come from their death notice, and if he didn't die there....
However, you might get some pointers here (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21140)

Thank you for your response Sue.

I know that Tom fought in the Boer War and I know that he died in Canada. His obituary did not give me much to go on but in his wife's obituary it stated that she went to South Africa and came back in 1904. I have searched and searched and finally found that they did indeed come back in 1904 because I found them both on ships manifests. Tom came in June and Amelia came in March. Both came via Liverpool to Canada.

I know that they married in Canada in 1900 and by the time of the 1901 Canadian census Amelia was with her mother and younger siblings and Tom was gone. I am not sure when Amelia or Tom left for South Africa, although I suspect that Tom left within weeks of his marriage. I would like to find out how they each got to South Africa, what they did while there and how they got to England from South Africa.

I have copies of Tom's attestation papers for WWI but am hitting a brick wall for anything to do with the Boer War.

All of your help is appreciated, I will take a closer look at the links that you provided.

Again, thank you
Lynda Marie
